Tamam Shud

Goolutionites and the Real People

The words tamam shud are taken from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and they mean: the very end. The band Tamam Shud were gigging around the East coast of Australia in the 1960’s and their music was heavily supported by film maker Paul Witzig who used much of their work in his ground breaking surf movie Evolution and others.

Newly released on CD for the first time Goolutionites and the Real People includes eight bonus tracks including tracks from the surf movie Morning of the Earth and a selection of live recordings from a gig at the Regent Theatre, South Yarra 1971.

The album is fresh and funky in so many ways. The line up over their relatively short life was: Lindsay Bjerre [gtr, vcls] 1967-72, Peter Barron [bs] 1967-72, Dannie Davidson [dr] 1967-70, Larry Duryea (aka Larry Taylor) [congas], Tim Gaze [gtr, vcls] 1970-2, Bobby Gebert [kbds] 1971, Richard Lockwood [sax, flute, clarinet] 1972, Nigel Macara [dr] 1970-72, Kevin Sinnott [dr] 1970, Kevin Stevenson [reeds] 1970, Alex 'Zac' Zytnic [gtr] 1967-70.

The band has obviously been influenced by 60’s musicians Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors and the whole San Francisco movement that discovered and popularized LSD, and their cover notes to this brilliant album aren’t afraid of saying so. Just one 76 minute session listening to Goolutionites and the Real People is likely to make you feel like you’re there, off your face and ready to hit the Uni Bar. It’s down right excellent!

Young cynics may hear it as music to destroy the planet by, but that’s not really the case. Australian youngsters in the 60’s and 70’s were just starting to protest against a lot of the darker things becoming obvious, including war, old growth forests, over population, the slaughter of whales and the mining of uranium… there were plenty of issues to protest against and a great willingness to create Australian experiences that were just as real and valid to the individual as the American or UK experience – thus – music that is honestly Australian but sounds like so many bands from far away in space and time. The lyrics are just as cutting now as they may have been back in the day – possibly more so because in so many ways this is a time capsule for Australian kids particularly to get a grip on what has come before them.

With so much diversity on the Australian music front these days, and the enormous influence of our multicultural society has had on the breaking out of new sounds it’s great to go back and hear something like this.

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes funky acid-rock with an authentic retro feel to it. One of the slickest and entertaining albums to come out for some time, Goolutionites and the Real People is a cracker!

Curated by Rachel Perkins and Darren Dale from Blackfella Films, their ninth film program will ask some big questions about Indigenous Australia including: What should be celebrated? What still needs to be addressed? and Where to now?

Our program this year reflects the big questions being asked by Australians about Black Australia. Aboriginal filmmakers use the lens to capture the feelings and thoughts of our people, talking about their lives at a turning point in our nation's history. Curator David Dale

"Aboriginal filmmakers have used the lens to capture the feelings and thoughts of our people, talking about their lives at a turning point in Australia's history," Dale said. "Message Sticks allows the nation to hear our stories and talk to the filmmakers who have opened the window to Black Australia."

"We are thrilled to be able to brings audiences closer to the filmmakers who have made these impressive films, in each state we will have directors and some of the films subjects at the screenings to answer those questions audiences never get to ask" Perkins said.

Darlene Johnson's documentary River of No Return is a film highlight. Her journey from tribal life to red carpets is unlike any other. After the Brisbane, Darwin and Mount Gambier screenings there will be a Q & A with Director Darlene Johnson and Frances Djulibing.

Another highlight will be Mad Morro, a confronting and compelling documentary from director Kelrick Martin. This powerful and dramatic story about familial love follows James Morris as he returns to Taree after 13 years in prison.

Director Rima Tamou profiles political activist Joyce Clague and her husband in When Colin Met Joyce. The marriage of Colin and Joyce Clague has been a forty year journey. They thrive on maintaining cultural teachings, breaking down barriers, speaking out politically, and focusing on the bigger picture. Their passions and struggles inspire a true sense of reconciliation. In Perth and Melbourne following the film, the producer Pauline Clague will talk to the audience about the work.

Allan Collins uncovers real-life phenomena from the 1940s and 50s in the beautifully filmed Spirit Stones. Noongar Elders reveal phenomenal events of the 1940s and 1950s in the south-west of Western Australia when mysterious stones fell for hours, days and weeks. Memories of the Noongar storytellers are linked with sensitivity and a lightness of touch to places of importance as exquisite images and sounds radiate feeling

In Wanja: Warrior Dog director Angie Abdilla records community reaction and escalating tension generated by increased police surveillance on The Block in Redfern through the eyes of a Blue Heeler.

Yeasayer

July 11th 2008 07:42
From Brooklyn, New York
Yeasayer
Australian Tour announced
October 2008

Yeasayer sound gloriously off-the-dial. The Age

Yeasayer announce they are taking a cosmic trip. The band will soon commence a spiritual journey from a mythical land (Brooklyn, New York) to our far off country.

This magical voyage has been much anticipated. With the indie blogosphere firmly in their corner, the eclectic four piece have made quite the name for themselves in a parallel dimension; the internet. Vest wearing brethren Chris Keating, Anand Wilderwere, Ira Wolf Tuton and Luke Fasano make up team Yeasayer each one a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Together they harmonize and take us on a phantasmagoric journey through time and space. They produce a strange and alluring sound' Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel- an apocalyptic vision drawn out of odd pop, 70s soft rock, African rhythms and psychedelic soul.

The Yeasayer debut long player All Hour Cymbals released late last year catapulted the foursome around the globe, into the minds of many a critic and music fan. They completed a mammoth US tour with friends MGMT and Man Man, and recently provided support to Beck on his European tour.

Yeasayer venture to Australia to deliver their famously trippy live show at The Great Escape Festival this October. with headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Please see below for show details.

The result is a unique form of indie rock world music that resists stepping into the essentialist, ethnocentric traps consistently tripped by high-minded hipsters. Pitchfork Media

MGT

July 11th 2008 07:28
Adelaide Festival Centre's trans:mission program presents
MGT

Austrian innovator Wolfgang Muthspiel, Australia's own Slava Grigoryan and US legend Ralph Towner come together to form guitar trio MGT, which will perform on 20 August at Her Majesty's Theatre. The performance is part of a national tour celebrating their debut CD release From a Dream, following their time here at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival in 2007. They previously toured Australia in 2005.

"Our first CD as a group From a Dream really highlights and celebrates our individual musical influences which is rich in displaying our own artistry within a trio format. We aimed to create a truly new ensemble 'voice' in the guitar world," says Grigoryan.

As MGT, Muthspiel, Grigoryan and Towner are intent on expanding the guitar repertoire. All are classically trained while varying in age and heritage and leading vividly different forays into world, jazz, and modern classical music. Forming MGT three years ago has been a dream come true for these accomplished individual performers and their world-wide fans alike.

Wolfgang Muthspiel is an internationally acclaimed guitarist/composer, and commands attention worldwide as an artist of deep integrity, intelligence and daring musicality. He takes solo performances to a new level, incorporating sophisticated electronic loops, samples and other sound sources with his instruments. European Jazz prize winner for 2003, Wolfgang Muthspiel is one of the most exciting artists on the jazz and classical scene today. His onstage improvisations are said to be "miracles of intensity."

Slava Grigoryan is well known to Australian audiences as an extraordinary classical guitarist. After a very successful involvement in the 2007 Adelaide International Guitar Festival, he will also be involved in 2008. Slava's performances in Australia include solo, duos and album releases with his brother Leonard and concertos with chamber and symphony orchestras. Slava is also a member of Saffire (The Australian Guitar Quartet). He continues to tour internationally across Europe, North America, Asia, the Middle East, and his home continent of Australia.

Ralph Towner has a distinguished career that stretches back more than 30 years as an internationally acclaimed 12 string and classical guitarist. He also plays piano, synthesizer, percussion and trumpet and has made notable recordings of jazz, classical music, folk music, and world music. Best known as the lead composer, guitarist, and keyboardist for the acoustic jazz ensemble "Oregon", Towner has also had a rich and varied solo career that has seen him collaborate with such great modern musicians as Gary Burton, John Abercrombie and Jan Garbarek. He was even honoured by Apollo astronauts who carried his music on cassette to the moon, officially naming moon craters after his compositions Icarus and Ghost Beads.

MGT will perform solo, duo and trio sets with pre-composed material, spontaneous composition and improvised mastery.
