Vampire bad, beauty queen good?

A night of glittering indulgence featuring a fashion spectacular with Little Potty Red Shoes, DJ's, bubbly, delicious chow and an exclusive special preview of a yet to be made film MISS TRANSYLVANIA.

Written and Directed by Charlotte Rose Hamlyn this innovative and colorful comedy with oodles of heart and buckets of sparkle tells the tale of a vampire who swaps her fangs for bangs and enters a beauty pageant in a quest to prove her humanity. A story about beast vs. man, told from an internal perspective and a social; beasts hiding in beauty queens, beauty hiding in presumed beasts. The hardest problem will be working out which is which!

Director Hamlyn, the youngest ever to win an award at the St Kilda Film Festival teams with producers Natascha Dowsett and David Robert Thring to create this original black comedy. The team are promising to visually amaze the audience as they tickle their funny bone and leave them wanting more.

In their endeavor to find investors to get Miss Transylvania on the road, they've come up with what they're calling a Fashion Film FUNdraiser featuring a fashion parade spectacular from Little Potty Red Shoes. The Door Mats live on stage. HartBEAT Dance Project live on stage. Media Makeup's Bling Bling Room (with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Foundation).

LUCINDA Williams' new album

July 21st 2008 08:44
LUCINDA WILLIAMS NEW ALBUM
LITTLE HONEY
TO BE RELEASED BY LOST HIGHWAY ON OCTOBER 11

Lost Highway will release Little Honey, the new album from three-time Grammy Award-winner Lucinda Williams on October 11.

Little Honey is Williams' ninth studio album and easily her most eclectic in a recording career that began in 1978.

After 30 years of writing, performing and recording, Williams is in the middle of her most prolific period to date. In February of 2007, Williams released the Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed West. Just over a year later Williams returns with new sounds, familiar styles, new friends, renewed optimism and thought-provoking sentiment on Little Honey.

The 13-songs on Little Honey showcase all of the elements that have made Williams one of the most celebrated living songwriters. She revives the spirit of the delta on Heaven Blues, emanates beauty and heartache on The Knowing, duets with Elvis Costello on the classic mini-drama Jailhouse Tears, sings poetry atop subtle horns on the epic Rarity, and exudes the country blues on Circles And X's, which she wrote in 1985. Williams dives deeper into her rock roots than ever on tracks such as the album’s opener Real Love, the intense, raw power of Honey Bee and the grand crescendos of Little Rock Star, where she draws on her personal wisdom from experience in a sincere letter to younger artists who walk the fine line between success and self-destruction.

Little Honey was produced by Eric Liljestrand, who engineered Williams' West, and Tom Overby. Along with Costello, Little Honey features guest vocals by Matthew Sweet, Suzanna Hoffs, Jim Lauderdale, Tim Easton and the legendary Charlie Louvin. Williams is backed by her solid road band Buick 6, which includes mainstay Doug Pettibone on guitar, with David Sutton (bass) and former Eels' members Chet Lyster (guitar) and Butch Norton (drums). Keyboardist Rob Burger, who also played on West returns for the Little Honey sessions.

ASH GRUNWALD

ASH GRUNWALD
FISH OUT OF WATER

NATIONAL TOUR

Ash Grunwald is back, all set to deliver his most adventurous & exciting release yet; the full length studio album FISH OUT OF WATER, in stores August 30. The album, which he collaborated on with respected beats master Countbounce from TZU features an exhilarating hybrid of musical styles, infused with beats and grooves, junkyard percussion, scorching riffs and Grunwald's trademark deep and strong vocal that is bound to impress and delight fans of quality music.

The Devil Called Me A Liar, the first single from the album, is a live favorite for Grunwald, featuring a grappling guitar riff that arose out of a particularly productive jam session. Producer Countbounce's description of Ash is that he’s an enthralling riff writer.

Fans of Ash Grunwald will already be familiar with his strong sense of musical adventure, and with Fish Out Of Water he has truly let his hair down, pushed all the boundaries and let rip in a major way. The upshot? A career highlight. And further proof that this Australian performer is bringing blues and roots to a whole new generation.

Triple J seem to agree, adding the track to rotation, and coming onboard to co-present Grunwald's upcoming national tour, which kicks off late August in Darwin before heading to WA, and then across to the East coast thru September and October. Tickets on sale now.

THE GRATES “TEETH LOST, HEARTS WON” TOUR
With The Vasco Era and The John Steel Singers
TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY, AUGUST 8th ($32 BF)

THE GRATES ANNOUNCE OCTOBER TOUR

The Grates live shows have now become stuff of legend. Patience's dancing style has its own patent, Alana's smile is always infectious and John is the captain of their musician-ship. You never know quite what to expect, as Winter Wonderlands, party balloons and colorful capers fill the stage. Their recent Surprise Parties where the unusual locations weren't revealed until 48 hours before the show are testimony to the fact that The Grates never stick to the norm!

With their upcoming new album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won already getting young hearts a flutter ahead of its early August release, The Grates get ready to give fans a coronary with the announce of a major national tour throughout October.

The Grates welcome The Vasco Era as their main support for their October joyride. The Vasco Era's J Award Nominated debut album Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside was a heady mix of delta blues and stomping rock & roll. With enough raw energy and howling vocals to keep up with The Grates, this Apollo Bay trio have fast gained a fierce live reputation. With new material coming up they’re sure to be one hot act!

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside

The Grates also welcome The John Steel Singers to the fray as their energetic opener. Thanks to some sweet Strawberry Wine this Brisbane six-piece have been taking over the airwaves at Triple J and hitting the road for some heavy touring with the likes of Yves Klein Blue. Featuring an instrument swapping horn section and indie tunes you can dance to, The John Steel Singers are just the ticket to get this party started.

As a special treat for fans, The Grates will be offering special pre-order packs including an album, a ticket to the show and handkerchief with a limited edition Grates pillow case available on line from HERE .

Teeth Lost, Hearts Won, builds on the success of The Grates debut album Gravity Won’t Get You High which debuted in the Top Ten of the ARIA charts, earned them critical praise and numerous accolades and saw releases in the USA, UK, Europe, Canada and NZ.

For their second album they teamed up again with Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Mates of State), but this time they took turns in the driver's seat of production duties. On this album, The Grates have brought a depth and density to the songwriting, the lyrics are raw and poignant, the sonics more biting and aggressive. There's still that Grates spirit and vibrancy, but there is also more reflection and more sophistication of expression.

The raucous new single Burn Bridges is a rebel-rousing, hoe-down inducing little ditty of rock & roll pop is out now through iTunes. The new album Teeth Lost, Hearts Won is out on August 2nd through Dew Process/UMA. The Grates will be performing at Splendour In The Grass.

Tamam Shud

July 16th 2008 05:37
Tamam Shud

Goolutionites and the Real People

The words tamam shud are taken from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and they mean: the very end. The band Tamam Shud were gigging around the East coast of Australia in the 1960’s and their music was heavily supported by film maker Paul Witzig who used much of their work in his ground breaking surf movie Evolution and others.

Newly released on CD for the first time Goolutionites and the Real People includes eight bonus tracks including tracks from the surf movie Morning of the Earth and a selection of live recordings from a gig at the Regent Theatre, South Yarra 1971.

The album is fresh and funky in so many ways. The line up over their relatively short life was: Lindsay Bjerre [gtr, vcls] 1967-72, Peter Barron [bs] 1967-72, Dannie Davidson [dr] 1967-70, Larry Duryea (aka Larry Taylor) [congas], Tim Gaze [gtr, vcls] 1970-2, Bobby Gebert [kbds] 1971, Richard Lockwood [sax, flute, clarinet] 1972, Nigel Macara [dr] 1970-72, Kevin Sinnott [dr] 1970, Kevin Stevenson [reeds] 1970, Alex 'Zac' Zytnic [gtr] 1967-70.

The band has obviously been influenced by 60’s musicians Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors and the whole San Francisco movement that discovered and popularized LSD, and their cover notes to this brilliant album aren’t afraid of saying so. Just one 76 minute session listening to Goolutionites and the Real People is likely to make you feel like you’re there, off your face and ready to hit the Uni Bar. It’s down right excellent!

Young cynics may hear it as music to destroy the planet by, but that’s not really the case. Australian youngsters in the 60’s and 70’s were just starting to protest against a lot of the darker things becoming obvious, including war, old growth forests, over population, the slaughter of whales and the mining of uranium… there were plenty of issues to protest against and a great willingness to create Australian experiences that were just as real and valid to the individual as the American or UK experience – thus – music that is honestly Australian but sounds like so many bands from far away in space and time. The lyrics are just as cutting now as they may have been back in the day – possibly more so because in so many ways this is a time capsule for Australian kids particularly to get a grip on what has come before them.

With so much diversity on the Australian music front these days, and the enormous influence of our multicultural society has had on the breaking out of new sounds it’s great to go back and hear something like this.

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes funky acid-rock with an authentic retro feel to it. One of the slickest and entertaining albums to come out for some time, Goolutionites and the Real People is a cracker!

Sex and the City: The Movie
by Amy Sohn

Publisher: Headline
RRP: AUD $52.00

You didn't really think it would be just a movie did you? The glossy hard-back book of the film is a fun addition to anyones collection. It's a stylish picture version of the film with commentary from the various folk responsible for putting it all up on the big screen, so it will appeal to Sex and the City fans who want something more than just a singular trip out to see the movie. It also holds a reasonable amount of interest for writers of tele-plays or screenplays with its blow by blow description of what happens not only through the big screen film, but what preceded it in the series.

Thankfully the producers and marketers haven't gone the way of Aussie 'horn bags' Kath & Kim creating everything from oven mitts to tea towels... yet; one wonders if the SATC Movie sequel will appear in 2027 when the girls can be sexy at sixty... but that's another story and bottle of Vodka.

The book is as reasonably classy as the characters in the story - so some portions of it tend to look like an Ikea catalogue although I think this gives mere mortals an opportunity to cost out the lifestyle they'd love to have before laying their credit card on the table.

TV Series Producer HBO has an official website that will get you up to speed on where the main characters were at as the final televised program aired, and there's seemingly no end to the variety of sites on the web that offer opinion on the series; but If you'd rather curl up with a good book than stare at a screen, this is a must have. You can get the address of all your favorite locations (such as the Brooklyn Bridge or Starbucks) and scan a brief history of Carrie's hair!

Like any such dedicated tome, to some it will seem a complete waste of paper, time and money, to others it will be a proud addition to a large collection of DVD's, girls nights out and empty chocolate boxes. Be warned though, it does tell the story of the film so it contains 'spoilers', but then, everyone's seen the movie by now haven't they?
