SUNDANCE KIDS TOUR WITH AVALON DRIVE
Two of Australia’s most promising alternative/indie bands, Avalon Drive and The Sundance Kids, unite for a three week residency tour throughout Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide from 24 August to 10 September, supported by local artists.

Sundance Kids

Avalon Drive and The Sundance Kids are creating a massive buzz at the moment across the country with both bands releasing highly anticipated new material in August and having recently played sold out shows in their home States. To keep the residencies fresh and exciting for the bands and fans alike, prior to the doors opening, the bands will toss a coin to decide the night’s line up, meaning a spontaneous line-up week to week as well as fostering some healthy and fun competition between the bands (excluding all Adelaide shows).

Described as a group who command some serious attention by Time Off Magazine and is a band you want to see live by MTV, Avalon Drive has performed with some of the biggest acts including INXS, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Hoobastank, Yellowcard and The Veronicas. The residencies will give punters the chance to see what all the hype is about!

Recently signing with SonyBMG, Avalon Drive " target="_blank">Avalon Drive are set to release their forthcoming EP later this year. Already possessing a strong fan base and known for their energetic live performances, Avalon Drive is a force to be reckoned with and should not be missed.

After independently releasing their second EP – Including the Atmosphere in 2007 and recording their debut album across May and June this year, The Sundance Kids have been busy touring the East Coast with their powerful blend of indie/pop/rock anthems, that speak volumes for who they are and how seriously they take their music. Quoted as being one of the premier rock acts in SA by Time Off Magazine, these five Adelaide boys are creating serious interest after a solid string of live shows and an ever growing following.

2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival

“As an actress, singer, comedienne and all-round warming presence, Bernadette Peters has no peer in the music theatre right now.” New York Times

“Arguably the most talented comedienne in the musical theatre today, Peters manages to extract a laugh from most every line she delivers.” Playbill

“Like very few others, she sings and acts at the same time…Most performers act and then sing, act and then sing…Bernadette is flawless as far as I’m concerned. I can’t think of anything negative.” Stephen Sondheim

The Adelaide Festival Centre is pleased to announce musical theatre legend Bernadette Peters will open the 2009 Adelaide Cabaret Festival, performing in the Festival Theatre on 6 and 7 June.

Bernadette Peters is the first artist to be announced from what promises to be an exciting program in 2009 under the new Artistic Directorship of David Campbell.

Adelaide Festival Centre’s CEO and Artistic Director, Douglas Gautier said, “We are delighted to have an artist of such a high calibre as Bernadette Peters to open the 2009 Festival and I am sure our Cabaret audience will be impressed with the rest of what David has in store for next year’s program.”

Having been immersed in the New York cabaret scene for a number of years, David saw Bernadette as a natural choice when looking for a headline act for the 2009 festival. "Bernadette Peters is a star! Her wit, charm, intelligence and exquisite voice have made her arguably the finest interpreter of the Broadway songbook that has ever been. For her to perform exclusively at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in my inaugural year is truly the greatest honour," David said.

Bernadette Peters is among the crème de la crème of live stage performers and a Tony Award-winning star on New York’s Broadway scene. Throughout her illustrious career, she has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage, television, in concert and recordings. Peters made her Broadway debut in 1967 and went on to star in a number of smash hit productions becoming one of the most sought-after stars in musical theatre. Peters received both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for her critically acclaimed performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Song and Dance. In 1999 Peters earned her second Tony Award, her third Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in the smash hit Broadway revival of Annie Get your Gun. Peters has also received Tony nominations for her work on the shows The Goodbye Girl, Sunday In The Park With George, Mack and Mabel, On The Town and in 2003 received her seventh Tony Award nomination for her electrifying portrayal of Momma Rose in Sam Mendes’ record-breaking Broadway revival of Gypsy, plus a Drama Desk nomination for her memorable portrayal of the Witch in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

While Peters is best known for her work in theatre, her career boasts an impressive list of television credits, which include a number of Emmy nominations for her performances. Peters has recorded original title songs for feature films and been the voice of a number of animated characters including “Sophie” in the feature film Anastasia. A performer of amazing versatility, Peters has lit up the silver screen in 17 films and received a Golden Globe Award for her memorable performance in Pennies from Heaven and has her shining star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition to numerous Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast albums, Peters has recorded six solo albums and received numerous accolades throughout her career, including being the youngest person to be inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Exclusive Season

Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas

Adelaide Film Festival, in association with the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas and Ava Bridge Motion Pictures Pty Ltd., is delighted to present an exclusive season of Scott Hicks’ latest documentary feature film, GLASS: a portrait of Philip in twelve parts at the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas.

The season will launch Saturday, November 1 with a special screening and Q&A with Scott Hicks presented with the Australian Writers Guild.

The season is part of Adelaide Film Festival’s commitment to present quality Australian films, which may not otherwise get a release to local audiences, and follows its two sold out screenings at the 2008 Adelaide Bank Festival of Arts.

GLASS: a portrait of Philip in twelve parts was in the Official Selection at 2007 Toronto Film Festival and 2008 Sydney Film Festival. Time Out New York rated the film with ‘Five Stars!’ and it was ‘Critic’s Pick’ in New York Magazine in April, during its New York City theatrical release.

Philip Glass' achievement in music - film scores, operas, symphonies - make him one of the most important composers of our era, crossing the divide between elite concert halls and popular venues. His composing 'signature' is so iconic it has been parodied on 'The Simpsons', and Glass has been featured as a 'South Park' character.

“I never was a captive of other people’s ideas about me,” Glass asserts at the beginning of this engaging documentary. “Whatever they thought, it didn’t matter to me.... I’ve been that way my whole life and it’s saved me a lot of trouble....”

What sets this documentary apart from others is the delicate and intimate nature through which it was made. Adelaide-based Director Scott Hicks demonstrated his own knack for popularizing classical music in his 1996 Academy Award© winning film Shine. In GLASS: a portrait of Philip in twelve parts, Hicks operates the camera himself tracing an eventful year in Glass’ life as he writes his eighth symphony, travels to three continents and works to maintain a family with his wife Holly. Allowed unprecedented access to Glass’ working process, family life, spiritual teachers and long time collaborators, Hicks artfully explores the many facets of a surprising and complex man. Woody Allen appears while working with Glass to score his film Cassandra’s Dream, and on another day Philip reminisces with his mentor Ravi Shankar (legendary sitarist and composer). Other interviews include Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line), Godfrey Reggio (KOYAANISQATSI) and Martin Scorsese (Kundun).

Hicks describes how the Glass documentary began: “I bought an HDV camera and flew to Nova Scotia where Philip was on vacation with his family. This was intended as a stopgap until I could afford to hire a cameraman, but what happened was that Philip started a dialogue with me behind the camera. It became apparent that the low impact of minimal crew allowed for a real intimacy and immediacy, which I did not want to lose.”

Adelaide's Queer Film Festival

August 19th 2008 15:09

After months of much anticipation, Adelaide's first Queer Film Festival has been launched to much fanfare with a showcase of films that will excite, stimulate and even shock at the Mercury Cinema over the first weekend in September.

The Adelaide Queer Film Festival will showcase an eclectic selection of feature films, short films and documentaries from Australia and around the world that is of interest to and or about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

AQFF Executive Producer Rohan Shearn says "These exciting and engaging films showcase a range of competing identities and ideals that impact on people's sexuality, family obligations, and the difficulty of finding true love."

The program has something to appeal to everybody including the Australian premiere of Tom Gustafson's WERE THE WORLD MINE as the Opening Night Feature. Award winning South Australian short film MY LAST TEN HOURS WITH YOU directed by Sophie Hyde, will also screen as part of the opening night program.

Many of the films selected are South Australian premieres including XXY directed by first-time Argentinean filmmaker Lucia Puenzo, an emotionally powerful story of a teenager's painful journey of identity and A JIHAD FOR LOVE, a daring documentary filmed in twelve countries and nine languages by Muslim gay filmmaker Parvez Sharma.

Presented earlier this year as part of the Official Selection of the Mardi Gras Film Festival and recently at the Melbourne International Film Festival, OTTO; OR, UP WITH DEAD PEOPLE is a gay zombie thriller directed by veteran film-maker Bruce La Bruce.

Paul Oremland's SURVEILLANCE is a fast-paced political thriller, shot in a style akin to that of investigative programme-making. BUTCH JAMIE is a quirky, gender-bending comedy by director Michelle Ehlen, about an out-of-work lesbian actor willing to try almost anything for a role.

Closing Night of the Festival will see drag icon RuPaul return to the silver-screen as a secret agent in STARRBOOTY. Directed by Mike Ruiz and jam-packed with delicious dialogue, insane characters, outrageous costumes and gratuitous hair, STARRBOOTY is sexy, sassy and salacious.

There are films for boys and films for girls and some for both! There is high camp fun and romantic tales of queer love. Throw in a few fairies, some glitter and a Zombie or two as Adelaide's queer community comes together for three days of celluloid fun.

The Adelaide Queer Film Festival opens at the Mercury Cinema on Friday 5 September 2008 with the full program available at the AQFF website.

LUCINDA Williams' new album

LUCINDA WILLIAMS NEW ALBUM
LITTLE HONEY
TO BE RELEASED BY LOST HIGHWAY ON OCTOBER 11

Lost Highway will release Little Honey, the new album from three-time Grammy Award-winner Lucinda Williams on October 11.

Little Honey is Williams' ninth studio album and easily her most eclectic in a recording career that began in 1978.

After 30 years of writing, performing and recording, Williams is in the middle of her most prolific period to date. In February of 2007, Williams released the Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed West. Just over a year later Williams returns with new sounds, familiar styles, new friends, renewed optimism and thought-provoking sentiment on Little Honey.

The 13-songs on Little Honey showcase all of the elements that have made Williams one of the most celebrated living songwriters. She revives the spirit of the delta on Heaven Blues, emanates beauty and heartache on The Knowing, duets with Elvis Costello on the classic mini-drama Jailhouse Tears, sings poetry atop subtle horns on the epic Rarity, and exudes the country blues on Circles And X's, which she wrote in 1985. Williams dives deeper into her rock roots than ever on tracks such as the album’s opener Real Love, the intense, raw power of Honey Bee and the grand crescendos of Little Rock Star, where she draws on her personal wisdom from experience in a sincere letter to younger artists who walk the fine line between success and self-destruction.

Little Honey was produced by Eric Liljestrand, who engineered Williams' West, and Tom Overby. Along with Costello, Little Honey features guest vocals by Matthew Sweet, Suzanna Hoffs, Jim Lauderdale, Tim Easton and the legendary Charlie Louvin. Williams is backed by her solid road band Buick 6, which includes mainstay Doug Pettibone on guitar, with David Sutton (bass) and former Eels' members Chet Lyster (guitar) and Butch Norton (drums). Keyboardist Rob Burger, who also played on West returns for the Little Honey sessions.
