"As I prepare to release my third album Deep Impressions, I put together this mix to share some of the music that had made an impression on me over my 20 years of collecting. I have drawn extensively from this resource in the creating of my own music, as have many that have gone before me. This is a collection of tunes that have been used in the creative process to make what we know as hip hop. Many of the songs are themselves classics that have a beautiful and still poignant message and vibe. Others contain fleeting moments of beauty that have been captured and reinterpreted to make modern day classics.

Apart form a few sneaky edits (to highlight the moments used by some of the best producers to have turned on a sampler) the tunes are as they appear on the original wax.

This series is dedicated to one of my music inspirations and heroes The Left Rev Eugene McDaniel's who passed away 29th July 2011. If your reading this and don’t know who the great man was, do yourself a favour and get familiar! This is Part 1.... more in the series to follow so stay tuned."

THE OFFICIAL RUGBY WORLD CUP 2011 ALBUM

‘World In Union’

The world's biggest-selling soprano, Hayley Westenra, launches The Rugby World Cup 2011 Official Album, entitled World In Union, to be released on Decca (a Division of Universal Music Operations Limited) in September.

The new Rugby World Cup 2011 album opens and closes with the title track ‘World In Union’ (based on Jupiter from Holst’s Planets Suite) – which has, over the years, been adopted as the global anthem for all Rugby World Cups. This rousing theme has become the only enduring official song for a major international sports event that is recorded anew for each Tournament, this year’s choice being the hosting nation’s own Hayley Westenra. This coincides with Hayley celebrating 10 years in the music industry.

The 24-year-old singer follows in the footsteps of another of the country’s most celebrated singers, fellow New Zealander Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who topped the charts with her version for Rugby World Cup 1991.

Hayley has not only recorded the song in English and Maori, as heard on this album, but also in Italian, French and Japanese – each version is expected to be heard played in the relevant countries.

The album continues with 20 more stirring tracks from around the globe, featuring some of the world’s most successful singers, that will both unite and inspire.

Representing ENGLAND is “the Nation’s Favourite Tenor” Alfie Boe with The Band of the Coldstream Guards performing the rousing Jerusalem, and rising star Laura Wright with her tender, acoustic version of Swing Low, a great rugby anthem that is also contrastingly performed by Russell Watson. For SCOTLAND the song Now’s The Time, based on the tune of Loch Lomond, is here sung by Scottish Tenor Luigi Corvi. The traditional Flower of Scotland is also featured, performed by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. From WALES we have none other than The Fron Male Voice Choir with Land Of My Fathers, as well as music from Bryn Terfel and Katherine Jenkins. And IRELAND brings its official song Ireland’s Call featuring Brian Kennedy representing the North and Paul Byrom the South, and introduces new Irish songstress, Mairead, with her rendition of The Fields Of Athenry.

Also included is a recording from International superstar violinist André Rieu from HOLLAND, with singer Mirusia Louwerse from AUSTRALIA. From AFRICA comes The Kenyan Boys’ Choir, and Roberto Alagna represents FRANCE with his version of the French National Anthem.

Rugby World Cup 2011 will be the largest sporting event ever to be held in New Zealand, with over 85,000 visitors expected to flock from overseas – but wherever you are in the world, this album will provide the perfect soundtrack.

iTunes Live from Sydney - Wednesday 3rd August

On the eve of the release of their first full-length effort, the freshly minted Moonfire, Boy & Bear will hold a free performance as part of the iTunes Live from Sydney series.

On Wednesday 3rd August, Sydney fans will have an opportunity to attend a live, acoustic and intimate performance by Boy & Bear as part of the iTunes Live from Sydney series. Fans are advised to head to the Boy & Bear's Facebook page for further information on how to attain tickets to this exclusive event.

Limited tickets will also be available at the door on the night a first come first served basis. Doors open at 8.30pm.

The performance will commence at 9.00pm and a recording of the performance will be made available exclusively on iTunes later this year. The session will include songs from Moonfire, including first single and triple j favourite 'Feeding Line' and the brand new single 'Milk & Sticks'.

Already armed with a swag of accolades including the 2010 triple j Unearthed award, Rolling Stone's 2011 'Artist to Watch' award and a top 5 inclusion in the triple j Hottest 100, the band locked themselves away in Nashville with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, White Stripes, The Shins), to record Moonfire. The album is a beautiful evolution from their highly acclaimed debut EP, With Emperor Antarctica.

Boy & Bear will return to the stage at the end of this month, performing once again at Splendour in the Grass. The band will depart Australia on the release of their album for a coveted performance at Chicago's Lollapalooza.

QUEEN: FINAL FIVE ALBUMS RE-ISSUED ON SEPTEMBER 2
1984-1995: THE SHOW MUST GO ON

Between 1984 and 1995 Queen released their last five studio albums and consolidated their reputation as the biggest, brashest and boldest band in the world. They achieved legendary status as they delivered THE defining performance of the century at Live Aid as well as headlining massive stadium concerts all over the world. Queen also released some of their best loved and most anthemic work in this period, before and after the passing of Freddie Mercury in 1991.

Now in 2011 Island Records reissue the five Queen albums from this period on September 2nd (to coincide with what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday – on 5th Sept) as part of the band’s 40th Anniversary celebrations – ‘The Works’, ‘A Kind Of Magic’, ‘The Miracle’, ‘Innuendo’ and ‘Made In Heaven’. The reissues will be accompanied by the third in the ‘Queen: Deep Cuts’ series, which looks at some of the lesser known tracks from these albums.

Many Queen favourites were released during this period including ‘Radio Gaga’ (the track from which Lady Gaga took her name), ‘I Want To Break Free’ (complete with the infamous cross-dressing Coronation Street parody video that MTV banned in the US), ‘One Vision’, ‘A Kind of Magic’, ‘I Want It All’, ‘The Miracle’ and ‘These Are The Days of Our Lives’ (featuring Freddie’s final haunting video appearance).

These five albums cover the era when Queen were elevated to truly legendary status as they stole the show at Live Aid in front of a global TV audience of 1.9 billion people, and wowed audiences with subsequent headline shows at Knebworth and Wembley in 1986, the latter recently voted by the public as one of the most iconic events ever seen at the stadium. This was also Queen’s most consistent period of commercial success with each of the five albums going platinum in the UK and ‘A Kind of Magic’ and ‘Made in Heaven’ each selling over 1 million copies, the latter doing so four years after Freddie’s death showing that the Queen legacy reigns eternal.

As well as their huge UK gigs they continued the global domination of the late 70’s playing Rock in Rio twice to crowds of over 300,000 each time. On their subsequent Magic tour they sold over 1 million tickets around the world playing the first ever stadium gig in Eastern Europe at the Nepstadium in Budapest with fans hitchhiking from all over the Eastern Bloc to attend.

After Freddie’s death The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert saw a packed Wembley set alight again to the music of Queen once again in April 1992, with stars from all over the world joining Queen surviving members John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor on stage. Subsequently The Mercury Phoenix Trust was founded to help distribute money raised from this concert for AIDS awareness. Since then, the Trust has raised and distributed over $15 million to help in the fight against AIDS.

The charity has just created a truly unique initiative with the launch of the 'Freddie For A Day' Global Charity Network. Freddie For A Day will be held on September 5th 2011. It’s an annual, worldwide event which falls around Mercury’s birthday date and is a fun way to remember one of the greatest artists of our time. But behind it is the earnest purpose of raising funds to support the continued work in fighting HIV AIDS worldwide.

Queens 40th Anniversary year has kicked off in spectacular style so far with their first ever major exhibition 'Stormtroopers in Stilettos' in London’s East End which drew an incredible crowd of over 20,000 visitors in two weeks, and kicked off with a star studded launch party attended by the likes of Foo Fighters and Jessie J.

A recent two part BBC TV documentary drew widespread rave reviews as Brian May and Roger Taylor looked back over their first 40 years in detail for the first time. The Guardian described it as ‘fantastic and moving’.

Meanwhile the bands first ten albums have been reissued to considerable acclaim. The Telegraph said of their early work, 'Queen's greatest music was extravagantly innovative, technically brilliant and created with a jeweller's care.’

These last five studio albums highlight the diverse talent, musical ambition and global success of a band made up of some of the best songwriters, musicians and performers of all time.

Sir Anthony Hopkins' Waltz

Sir Anthony Hopkins

On July 3, violinist Andre Rieu received the Grand Gold Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria. Awarded by Marianna Klicka, president of the District of Vienna, Rieu received the decoration because of his efforts to promote Viennese music around the world.

Along with his Johann Strauss Orchestra, Rieu then performed the world premiere of And The Waltz Goes On, penned by film legend Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Hopkins came all the way from Los Angeles to attend the premiere. See the performance here.

Hopkins has written music for many years, but the acting star composed his latest piece, And The Waltz Goes On, with Rieu specifically in mind to perform it. Rieu was so enthusiastic about the work that he immediately set plans in motion to record it, reportedly moving Hopkins' wife to happy tears during the initial performance of the tune.

"I've been a great admirer of Andre Rieu for several years. He's a great musician. My wife and I had the same dream of meeting him one day, so I sent him some music that I wrote. It's a dream come true for me that Andre performed it with his orchestra. I'm totally knocked out by the result. It's even more than I expected!" says Anthony Hopkins about his cooperation with Andre Rieu.

The waltz will be on Rieu's new album, slated for release in Australia later this year, and will be performed by Rieu at the concerts in his hometown Maastricht. Again Sir Anthony Hopkins will be present when Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra perform his waltz at the Vrijthof square.

It’s no secret that Australia and New Zealand love the Foo Fighters and the sentiment is 100% reciprocated. Upon hearing of the natural disasters that affected Queensland and Christchurch earlier this year, the Foos were quick to donate their time and raise over $1 million for the relief funds:

If the Foo Fighters tour wasn’t already exciting enough, no event can legitimately lay claim to the biggest rock concert of the year without including the band behind the “best song in the world”. Oh yes, we’re talking about the one and only Tenacious D aka. Jack Black and Kyle Gass who last blew fans away with their 2007 tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Jack Black’s theatrical vocals and lyrical narrative coupled with Kyle Gass’ manic guitar skills will shred stadium crowds to pieces and take them on a sonic voyage to rock heaven and back, delivering an audience primed for the Foo Fighters to take the stage.

Though it seems this line-up could not possibly get any better, Frontier Touring are not done yet. Stay tuned for further announcements to hear who else will be rounding out this spectacular bill!

The birthplace of jazz - no less, The Big Easy, The Crescent City. Straddling the Mississippi River and often referred to as the single most unique city in America, New Orleans is a legend unto itself. Famous for its music, its cuisine, its Mardi Gras, its voo-doo and of course, its nightlife, from the bottom of Bourbon St all the way up through the French Quarter – New Orleans’ role in the history of jazz and blues is undisputed. And now, from the city where it all began, the penultimate celebration of rhythm, jazz and blues is headed to Australia.

The inaugural ‘Legends Of New Orleans’ tour sees some of New Orleans most influential and revered musical figures of all time, all on one stage, in Australia, for the first time EVER. Featuring a massive 17 musician strong touring party direct from N’awlins to some of Australia’s landmark venues (The Opera House, Palace Theatre and more – please see footer for full details), the tour stands as one of the biggest events of its kind on the 2011 Australian touring calendar.

Hailed around the world as one of the defining voices of rock, rhythm and blues, legendary pianist, vocalist, producer and songwriting genius Allen Toussaint has crossed many paths in his illustrious 40 years plus career. He has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by, and performed with music giants Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Mac "Dr. John" Rebannac, Aaron and Art Neville, The Judds, Joe Cocker, The (original) Meters, Glen Campbell, The Band, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Devo, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Eric Gale and the countless others. He has been compared by Elton John to the Dalai Lama because of the way he “influenced the way I played the piano, [and] he’s a historical part of rock and roll.” His influence and legacy stretches far across modern music history.

Having been born and lived most of his life in New Orleans, as a composer, performer, and arranger in the 60s and 70s he helped established the soul and funk that we know today. His contribution was formally recognised in 1998 with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Jon Cleary & The Philthy Phew

In the hallowed ranks of New Orleans ‘piano professors,’ Jon Cleary is on the tenure track. Born in England and bred in New Orleans, Jon Cleary is a triple threat, combining soulful vocals, masterful piano skills, and a knack for composing infectious grooves with melodic hooks and sharp lyrics. He balances a career performing on solo piano, playing with noted funk band The Absolute Monster Gentlemen and his new power trio The Philthy Phew, with a career as a notorious hired gun for artists such as Bonnie Raitt and John Scofield. Cleary is featured on vocals and keyboards on the recently released, Piety Street by John Scofield & The Piety Street Band. Cleary has toured with Bonnie Raitt since 1999, and has appeared on the albums Silver Lining and Souls Alike. On these recordings, Raitt covered the Cleary originals, ‘Fool’s Game,’ ‘Monkey Business,’ ‘Unnecessarily Mercenary,’ and ‘Love on One Condition.’

If you missed The Dirty Dozen Brass Band during Sydney Festival recently, don’t do it again! Featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, Dr. John and the Black Crowes. The Dirty Dozen formed in 1977 and revolutionised the New Orleans brass band style by incorporating funk and bebop into the traditional New Orleans style. They have been a major influence on the majority of New Orleans brass bands since. Thirty years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine, whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have revitalized the brass band in New Orleans and around the world, progressing from local parties, clubs, baseball games and festivals in their early years to touring nearly constantly in the U.S. and over 30 other countries across five continents.
