Australia loves Kaki King

September 15th 2010 09:07
It’s pretty much stating the obvious that Australia loves Kaki King, and with the amount of trips the girl in question has made down here since bursting into our consciousness back in 2007, it’s also obvious the love flows both ways. Now, Top Shelf are pleased to announce Kaki King has added some capital city side shows to her upcoming appearances at Queenscliff & Mullum Music Festivals.
Her last trip here was in December ‘09, and since then the prolific artist has released her latest offering, JUNIOR, to much acclaim, both here and internationally.

“King’s playing is awe-inspiring …. It’s darn near impossible to resist her charms.” – NME

“King’s voice, whether riding roughshod over her band’s new found bravura arrangements, or playing the smoky chanteuse, is still a decisive instrument of its own; fruity and brusque or lilting and cowed, she makes every word count.” – Mojo ****

“This is an out-and-out rock album, intimate and gritty, but with some surprisingly soft moments, where every note melts into the next.” - THE MERCURY
Junior is another leap forward for the super talented Kaki King, and she finally gets a chance to bring the new songs to us when she returns in November, bringing her US band of Dan Brantigan & Jordan Perlman along for the ride once again.

The Temper Trap 2010 TOUR

May 7th 2010 14:22
THE TEMPER TRAP
DEBUT ALBUM CONDITIONS REACHES PLATINUM!

Whilst it may come as no surprise to the Australian music loving public, it is with great pride and delight that The Temper Trap announce their debut album Conditions as having achieved platinum sales in Australia.

The widely acclaimed album spawned multiple hit singles, including Platinum single ‘Sweet Disposition’ and ‘Love Lost’ - both of which are currently in the ARIA Top 40. It debuted at Number 9 in the ARIA Top 50 Albums chart and is still currently in the Top 20 after forty five weeks on the chart.

The Temper Trap recently performed at the illustrious Coachella music festival in California, drawing a massive crowd and captivating the audience with ease and charm.

The band has also been confirmed to play at additional U.S. festival heavyweights Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, U.K. based Glastonbury and our very own Splendour in the Grass and are currently on tour across Europe and North America. Their recent and upcoming tour dates are all testament to their rapidly growing reputation as mesmerising live performers.

This July sees them returning to our shores for a tour of Australia & New Zealand and local fans and critics can’t hardly wait.

Often called 'The Ones to Watch,' Welsh three piece band The Joy Formidable are bringing their dreamy sound to The Temper Trap's Australian tour along with AMP Red Bull Award winners Oh Mercy. The Auckland performance will be opened by New Zealand natives The Naked and Famous.

The Temper Trap's Perth, Melbourne and Sydney shows have sold out and whilst tickets to their Adelaide and Auckland performances are still available now, these shows are sure to follow suit.

THE TEMPER TRAP
RETURN TO AUSTRALIA & NZ FOR JULY 2010 HEADLINE TOUR

At the start of this year The Temper Trap gave Australian and New Zealand audiences a taste of why they were one of the most talked about bands in the world last year with standout performances across a series of summer festivals. Fans clamoured for more and the band paid attention, making room in a hectic worldwide tour for July 2010 dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland.

2010 is already shaping up to be a busy one, with The Temper Trap currently on tour across America. Conditions is sitting at #4 on the Billboard Heatseeker chart, while some of the biggest radio stations in the USA have set Sweet Disposition to high rotation. The buzz around the band is audible with a sold out six week US tour and appearances at SXSW, Coachella and Bonnaroo sure to earn the band even more supporters. Notably US music industry bible Billboard Magazine profiled the band in a double page ‘Happening Now’ feature in their February 20 issue, noting “The Temper Trap are shaping up to be the next big thing from Down Under.”

The UK story also continues to grow from their Top Ten hit with Sweet Disposition last year, with the band selling over 33,000 tickets to their UK tour, including an impressive three nights at Shepherds Bush Empire. The band are also headlining the Wireless Festival, as well as performing at T In The Park and Roskilde festivals.

Worldwide sales of Sweet Disposition have now exceeded 500,000, while album sales for Conditions have tipped over the 300,000 mark.

If The Temper Trap’s festival performances were mass sing-a-longs, then these July shows are set to take The Temper Trap to a whole new level with four acclaimed singles now under the band’s belts. Soaring Platinum hit Sweet Disposition, rocking tracks Science of Fear and Fader and the latest anthemic offering Love Lost are sure crowd favourites, while album Conditions has become a staple on iPods and radios across both countries.

With their album fast approaching Platinum sales in Australia there’s little doubt that The Temper Trap have won the hearts of music fans. Significantly though, the band have delivered more than just a standout debut album, with music critics praising the quality and energy of the band’s live performances.

“The Temper Trap execute their set perfectly…” J Mag, Australia, Feb 2010

““Sweet Disposition”…had the crowd swaying in unison and singing along” Undertherader.co.nz, New Zealand, Jan 15, 2010

“When the band broke into their signature hit Sweet Disposition the sardined mass roared and jumped up and down despite the searing heat.” Daily Telegraph, Sydney, Jan 23, 2010
“Album stand-outs Fader, Love Lost, Down River, Science of Fear and Sweet Disposition were all monster singalongs.” The Age, Melbourne, Jan 08, 2010

“The Temper Trap kicked off the day with a bang…[the band] have the energy and skill of bands with twice the stage experience.” 3 News, New Zealand, Jan 15, 2010

“Every year one band is too popular for the stage they’re on. This year it was Melbourne’s The Temper Trap…the reaction to British Top 10 hit Sweet Disposition was one of the first moments of the day, but most tracks from their debut album Conditions were singalongs including the stunning Love Lost.” Herald Sun, Melbourne, Jan 27, 2010

There’s little doubt that The Temper Trap’s upcoming July concerts are going to be must-sees on the 2010 concert calendar. Tickets for Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland go on sale on Monday 29 March at 9am local time.

Pre-sale tickets will be available via frontiertouring.com from noon AEDT Thursday 25 March to noon AEDT Friday 26 March.

Album Of The Week - FBi
Album Of The Week RTR

"These guys are fantastic. Simple as that." Richard Kingsmill, Triple J

“Instrumental crescendos and decrescendos against a backdrop of rolling drum lines, sweet male/ female vocal juxtapositions and other musical ebbs and flows” Time Off

"Auditory heaven. Think the ridiculously beautiful music of Sigur Rós but with electro, piano and rock elements… a masterpiece." Music Feeds

"Bold, startling, awe-inspiring and genuinely heartfelt…You could say they sound like Radiohead, Pink Floyd but really, they sound like nothing else around" The Dwarf

"Understated beauty” FasterLouder

Parades are a young art rock band from Sydney who wisely choose to create their own music with no outside input or interference. Featuring Dan Cunningham, Tim Jenkins, Michael Scarpin and Jonathan Boulet – Parades’ debut album Foreign Tapes is released this Friday 23rd April.

The album is expansive and ambitious; a haze of pop harmonies, post rock guitars and electronic meanderings. Drum Media did a great job describing the band when they said:

"Parades create their homely tunes in a garage in Sydney's Northwest, but it might as well be Iceland or the moon. They have an ethereal, expansive sound that is sweet and understated”

Parades are taking on their new album Foreign Tapes on the road in their biggest tour yet, over 10 dates across four states.

Supporting them in Ballarat, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Wollongong will be special guests Belles Will Ring, who are back with a new single Come To The Village, the first track from their second album due out in Spring 2010.

ORIANTHI CONCERT

April 6th 2010 14:27

SHOWS IN ADELAIDE AND SYDNEY CONFIRMED FOR ORIANTHI

Australia's Lady guitar prodigy, Orianthi - known to rock it out in the big league, including with Michael Jackson, is confirmed for a stand-alone concert in her home-town of Adelaide and a sideshow in Sydney when she returns to support John Mayer on his Battle Studies tour.

Orianthi will take a swerve from the Mayer tour, which starts in Brisbane on 30 April and doesn't include Adelaide, to play at the Entertainment Centre Theatre on Sunday 2 May and, after the tour wraps up, The Factory in Sydney on Sunday 9 May.

Tickets for both shows are on sale now, through Ticketek.

Radio across the country has been all over her single, According To You, said promoter, Chairman of Chugg Entertainment, Michael Chugg.
Adelaide fans really wanted to see their girl on home-turf and it's great news we could make that happen. There’s nothing better than watching a performer in front of a home crowd, he continued, there's going to be an unbeatable buzz at her Adelaide show.

In keeping with Chugg's renown to build an artist he said including Sydney for a show of her own made sense.

She’s going to be big. She writes her own songs, she plays guitar like a demon and looks fantastic. Heading up these two special shows on her own is just the start, Chugg finished.

After the recent release of her single and video clip, ‘The Way You Are’, which has been making radio waves around the country, Kate Vigo is making a name for herself in the music scene. Now…the greatly anticipated release of her second single and EP ‘Someone Better’ will take place at The Spiegeltent at the Garden of Unearthly Delights on Sun 28th Feb at 9.45pm.

REVIEWS

“A little bit torch singer, a little bit pop, and a whole lot entrancing.”
Herald Sun, HIT

“Kate Vigo is a special recording artist! A performer with class, sass and distinction. Her vocals have a certain magnetism that draws you in. Vigo, in just one concise but infectious song, gets under your skin and sets off an addictive reaction. This is the start of something big”
Toxic Pete Music Reviews

“In the wake of Lily Allen, Adele and Duffy, Britain has put out such an army of young, nice-but-mouthy-when-they-nee d-to-be soulful female singers. Vigo’s doing a damn impressive job of picking up our local slack in this department, proving as vocally cute, vulnerable and potentially feisty as any of the above.”

Dutchman Remco Keijzer and Australian Lucian McGuiness normally reside hemispheres apart, but they brave long haul flights and carry-on restrictions to join musical forces whenever possible. In 2009 they launch the album The Seed Habit on Rufus Records (thru Universal). The disc is the product of three years collaboration in Australia and The Netherlands, and was recorded in Sydney in 2008.

Jazz is transitory. It twists, turns, strikes and moves on – just like the Keijzer McGuiness Quintet, and the music on their infectiously toe-tapping début release. A tenor and trombone combination like Keijzer & McGuiness is hard to beat - a sleek, humanistic sound curls up inside your ear and expands your mind.

Among the best young players in their hometowns, Keijzer-McGuiness gigs soar melodically, with gutsy engagement between personnel; a spectrum of youthful energy, soul, breadth and vigour.

This album delivers the key contribution of the jazz tradition: great playing to make your toe tap and your head bounce. Better still, it doesn't fall into the trap of over-seriousness. Sounds like fun.

RELEASED MARCH 2009
The Keijzer McGuiness Quintet

Remco Keijzer (tenor saxophone)

Remco studied jazz and improvisation at The Hilversums Conservatory, The Conservatory of Amsterdam and The Manhattan School of Music. He’s played with luminaries Dick Oatts, Dave Binney and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, inspired a contemporary big band for emerging composers and added soulful sax to a popular live hip hop act sans samples.

Lucian McGuiness (trombone)

Lucian studied in Canberra, Amsterdam and Sydney. He plays with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and Ben Walsh’s Crusty Suitcase Band, and has performed or recorded with a wide variety of artists including Jim McNeely, Shasha Marley, The Herd, The Holland Big Band and Steve Hunter.

Matt McMahon (rhodes/piano)

Matt leads his own groups and co-leads Band of Five Names with Phil Slater and Simon Barker. He won the National Jazz Award, and the Freedman Jazz Fellowship, and has played and recorded with Dale Barlow, Greg Osby, Katie Noonan, Vince Jones, Bobby Previte, Dave Panichi and Steve Hunter.

Mike Majkowski (double bass)

Mike is one of the new breed of creative musicians emerging on Australia's music scene. A gifted jazz bassist committed to a wide spectrum of contemporary music: he’s a founding member of the large-scale Sydney-based electro-acoustic group The Splinter Orchestra; a member of The Now Now collective, and works closely with some of Australia's most highly regarded improvisers - Jon Rose, Chris Abrahams and Jim Denley.

GERARD MASTERS TRIO | On Tour!

October 2nd 2008 01:20
Following the successful launch of his highly praised third album Pendulum earlier this year, Gerard Masters takes his trio on a lightning five cities in five days tour around the country.

Whilst remaining true to the jazz piano trio tradition, there’s a pop/rock sensibility which Gerard brings to the band via four years touring and recording with artists such as Missy Higgins and Ben Gillies (Silverchair). There is also a strong blues/roots tinge to some of the tracks, as is evident in Stockton Shuffle and some what more elusively in Richie P.

As always Cameron Undy steers the ship to higher ground with his uncompromising dedication to solid and extrapolating bass line construction perfectly complimented by the group’s most recent addition, drummer Evan Mannell.

The Gerard Masters Trio has been performing together since 2000 and have developed into one of Australia’s finest modern jazz groups.

Led by New Zealand born Gerard Masters, the trio has been a significant part of Sydney label Jazzgroove Records and has performed at major jazz festivals in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Europe.
