BLAKE | Classical Boyband

March 9th 2010 12:44
INTRODUCING THE HAUNTING NEW ALBUM
‘TOGETHER’
FROM “THE CLASSICAL FAB FOUR”

BLAKE

Including the single ‘Beautiful Earth’ - the Earth Hour and World Wildlife Fund anthem

Just three years ago, four young men with a passion for music, found each other on Facebook and decided to form a classical Boyband. After capturing the imagination of the music industry and public alike, the boys signed a multimillion dollar record deal, toured the world, performed for royalty, and defined the genre that became classical crossover. BLAKE-mania had begun.

BLAKE | Classical Boyband

Produced by industry veteran, Nick Patrick, who has worked with Katherine Jenkins and Hayley Westenra, ‘TOGETHER’ is a mixture of classical standards and new arrangements of popular repertoire of the past forty years.

The title perfectly describes the album’s themes of peace, harmony and togetherness including Paul Simon’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, Elvis Costello’s ‘She’, the respectfully haunting ‘Abide With Me’, ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables as well as the Denise Rich track ‘Unsung Hero’, written for the boys.

The song ‘Beautiful Earth’ was written by BLAKE specifically for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the upcoming Earth Hour celebrations (March 27). At 8.30pm on 27th March 2010, millions of people will show they care about climate change, by turning off their lights for ‘Earth Hour’. Earth Hour 2009 was the world’s largest mass participation event on climate change, with around a billion people in 88 countries, switching off their lights for one hour. In total 1,059 iconic landmarks around the world switched off their lights, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, The Strip in Las Vegas and the Pyramids in Egypt. Click here for the ‘Beautiful Earth’ filmclip.

Blake recently unveiled their highly anticipated third album, ‘TOGETHER’ in the UK late 2009 which has now gone on to be nominated for the 2010 Classical BRIT ‘Album Of The Year’ award.

The past year that has seen Blake triumph at Wimbledon (at the grand opening of the historic new roof), tour the UK with soprano Natasha Marsh and saw the boys take their svelte look and four of the most exceptional voices to the rest of the World. When in Australia in late 2009, their album ‘And So It Goes’ went straight to #1 on the ARIA Classical chart, beating the legendary Andre Rieu. They also performed at The Melbourne Cup and Spring Racing Carnival and the media dubbed them as “The Classical Fab Four”. Blake will also launch their assault in America later this year, at a very special gala show in New York.

ART vs SCIENCE had a pleasant day yesterday when they came in at #74 and #2 in triple j's Hottest 100 for the songs 'Friend in The Field' and 'Parlez-Vous Francais? respectively.

The surprise results cap off a mega 2009 (an ARIA nom, J Award, AIR Award, impressive EP sales and what have you) for the Sydney dance-rock three-piece and can possibly be attributed to the band's numerous show-stopping live performances over the past 12 months.

Dame Shirl Returns

September 26th 2009 01:05
DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY RETURNS WITH
THE PERFORMANCE
FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN OVER 20 YEARS

Dame Shirley Bassey, Britain's most successful female artist ever, is set to release her brand new album The Performance on November 13.

The 11-track album is Dame Shirley Bassey's first full studio album in over 20 years. David Arnold, the Grammy Award-winning producer best known for scoring five James Bond films has produced the album.

The Performance features songs written specifically for Dame Shirley Bassey, by a stellar cast of contemporary artists, including, Take That's, Gary Barlow, the Manic Street Preachers, Pet Shop Boys, KT Tunstall and Rufus Wainwright. The album also features a brand new composition from John Barry and Don Black; the first new song written by them for Dame Shirley since 'Diamonds Are Forever.'

Speaking about producing the new album, The Performance, David Arnold said:

All these songs were just songs, until Dame Shirley Bassey sang them. Now they're Shirley Bassey songs - hopefully classic and contemporary, like that voice. There's something about a Bassey performance that can knock the wind out of your sails, make you laugh, make you cry, let you in on the joke or be led to a more exotic place. I tried to make a record that made the most of that voice and one that could sit alongside her other classic recordings.

There isn't a 'next Shirley Bassey', there never really was and I doubt if there ever will be. She's as unique and wonderful today as she has ever been and I hope this record will reach an audience who may never have heard her before, so they can say 'she's got it', and for her fans from the past who can say 'she's still got it'.

During a career that has included a whopping 135 million record sales, Dame Shirley Bassey has had many incredible highlights, including being the only artist to record three James Bond movie theme songs. Dame Shirley has received numerous awards including a DBE [Dame of the British Empire] in 1999.

In 2007, Dame Shirley appeared at the Glastonbury festival, where at the same event Arctic Monkeys covered 'Diamonds Are Forever'. Kanye West also sampled the same track on his 2005 Grammy-winning song 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone'.

The full tracklisting for The Performance

Almost There [Tom Baxter]
Apartment [Rufus Wainwright]
This Time [Gary Barlow]
I Love You Now [Nick Hodgson]
Our Time Is Now [John Barry/Don Black]
As God Is My Witness [David Arnold/David McAlmont]

The Eternal | Sonic Youth

February 24th 2009 03:28
Sonic Youths 16th album, The Eternal, will be released on vinyl, compact disc, and digital album by Matador Records on June 9. Produced by John Agnello and the band, The Eternal not only marks Sonic Youths return to the independent label sphere (titles on their own SYR label excepted) after a long association with Geffen, but more importantly, ranks as one of their more inspired efforts in a 28 year career.

Sonic Youth

Recorded through November and December of last year at the bands Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, The Eternal features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youths touring band for the past few years.

The bands current extracurricular activities are particularly interesting. The Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf, Germany is now hosting the touring museum exhibition SONIC YOUTH ETC.: SENSATIONAL FIX, which focuses on the band's multidisciplinary work since the bands formation in 1981, including their collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians.

Kim Gordon launches a clothing line, Mirror/Dash, at Urban Outfitters on February 16, and is showing at The Armory Show in NYC March 5-8.

Lee Ranaldo, with co-conspirator Leah Singer, just opened installations at the Konsthall in Stockholm and the CNEAI in Paris, and he has a piece in the travelling exhibition Bad Moon Rising 3, currently at Boots Contemporary Art Space in St. Louis.

A Beck/Sonic Youth split 7" is being released by Matador on April 18 for Record Store Day.

And the band recently collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company (along with former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and mixed-media sound composer Takehisa Kosugi) on a work celebrating, and being performed for, Cunninghams 90th birthday on April 16 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Sonic Youth are:

Steve Shelley

Lee Ranaldo

Thurston Moore

Matador will shortly announce a Buy Early Get Now opportunity for the album with some very interesting bonus material.

The Lives Of Lee Memorial

February 24th 2009 03:08
Lee Memorial is Karl Smith’s new band.

Lee Memorial is also the latest signing to Remote Control’s Dot Dash label, home of Wolf & Cub, New Buffalo, Snowman, St Helens and Ned Collette. Their debut album The Lives Of Lee Memorial will be released late March 2009.

Lee Memorial
introducing LEE MEMORIAL
Karl was one half of Sodastream, who were based first in Perth and then in Melbourne.

Between 1999 and 2006 Sodastream:
- Released 4 albums, 5 EPs and a live recording
- Signed with Rough Trade US and Tugboat Records (part of Rough Trade UK)
- Toured Europe 7 times, as well as the USA and Japan
Quite wonderful said John Peel, A blindingly beautiful beam of light said the Sydney Morning Herald

Lee Memorial
is named after a guesthouse in Kolkatta, India where Karl’s family used to stay when he was a child. (Karl lived in Bangladesh and India until he was thirteen).

With Lee Memorial Karlwanted to try something a bit different to Sodastream, to present his new songs with a full band.

Joining Karl in Lee Memorial for the debut album are:

- Laura MacFarlane, one time drummer with Sleater-Kinney and founder of Melbourne outfit Ninety Nine
- Tom Lyngcoln from Nation Blue plays lead guitar, a perversely appealing notion given the somewhat diametrically opposite sounds of the two bands
- Madeline Spawton who has no ragged pedigree, which in many ways is a good thing, but plays clarinet and cello which is exactly what Karl was looking for
- Matt Bailey (ex-Paradise Motel) plays bass (Matt has now departure to pursue his solo project, and Steve Thomas from Zond has taken over bass duties)

Lee Memorial is a band - and a band with genuine chemistry, more than evident by the fact that they recorded eleven of the album’s songs in four days.

ERIC BIBB | NEW ALBUM

January 14th 2009 07:44
ERIC BIBB | GET ONBOARD

Available Saturday January 17

International folk-blues ambassador, Eric Bibb, is about to release his stunning new album, Get Onboard. Produced by Eric Bibb and his producer Glen Scott, is Bibb’s finest album to date and significantly topped the most added list at US Triple A radio (Adult album alternative) last year. Featuring guest appearances by Bonnie Raitt and Ruthie Foster, the album signals a deeper exploration into his musical roots. Eric himself said, “My new album is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting projects of my career. It’s a further exploration into the place where blues meets gospel and soul.”

The album was recorded in Nashville and features a stellar line-up of musicians headed up by Bonnie Raitt (slide guitar on “If Our Hearts Ain’t In It”) and including a duet (“Conversation”) with Ruthie Foster. The Nashville band included producer Glen Scott on keyboards and backing vocals, Tommy Sims (Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson, Eric Clapton) on guitar, bass and backing vocals, Lemar Carter on drums (Carrie Underwood, Joss Stone, India.Arie) and other Nashville musical luminaries.

Australian fans can get a taste of Eric Bibb as he returns to play in March 2009. His run of shows will take in most capital cities, and includes much anticipated performances at Byron Bay’s East Coast Blues & Roots music festival.

Since Bibb last toured here on the back of his 2006 album Diamond Days, he’s played hundreds of shows across three continents, with acclaimed appearances at esteemed festivals in 2008 such as Glastonbury, Cornbury Festival, the Cambridge Folk Festival, Nice Jazz Festival (France), and more.

As if to echo the sentiment, the Austin American-Statesmen commented after seeing a 2008 performance that, “Bibb’s voice is a sweet, smoky baritone… when Bibb plays, blues and gospel become one glorious whole.”

Eric Bibb's music is a rich blend of the blues with elements of folk, country, gospel, and soul. He is the son of New York folk singer, who influenced Eric immeasurably with exposure to a wide variety of acoustic folk music and the opportunity to “hang out” with performers like and in the sixties when Eric was a young boy. He later went on to immerse himself in pre-war blues guitar playing and song writing, moved to Europe in his twenties and eventually settled in Sweden where a world music folk scene was emerging ahead of being marketed throughout the globe.

“(New album) ‘Get Onboard’ offers further proof that Bibb is working at an extremely high level of artistry.” – Billboard Magazine

“A superb musician and performer.” – Q Magazine

“A voice to die for.” – The Times
