THE SOUNDS OF WINTERLAND HEAT UP CARRIAGEWORKS’ NIGHTS

A series of 18 free live music events featuring over 100 local and emerging artists

There’s no excuse not to make the most of the winter nights (6-10pm) this July, with a massive line-up of free live and themed music nights at CarriageWorks as part of Sydney’s cutting edge arts centre’s first-ever Winterland festival (5-31 July, 2010).

Slowdowns
Get off the couch and down to Eveleigh for Sydney’s biggest indie music, arts, food, and skating winter festival, to check out some of Sydney’s newest and coolest emerging bands, or hit the ice for Winterland’s evening skate sessions to cool tunes. Skate/dance the night away under CarriageWorks giant disco ball and hear the hottest bands and DJs heart-warming sounds heating up the wintry nights throughout July.

Highlights of Winterland’s hot live showcase include indigenous country and western duo Stiff Gins, pop/folk singer Rosie Catalano, indie/folk inspired band The Preachers, acoustic crew Leroy Lee, alt country cowboy band The Slowdowns, and Ray Mann the troubadours of soul.

Every Thursday night emerging and established bands will provide the sounds of winter. Themed nights include alt country (8 July) with the likes of Sydney newcomers tipped the 'next big thing' - The Preachers, old timey hillbilly band The Lurkers, fiddle fuelled gypsy pop group Wil Massey and The Ghost Trio, and singer/songwriter Charlie Trindall.

Winterland goes unplugged with an acoustic/folk night (15 July) staring Triple J Unearthed’s winner Leroy Lee, and Rosie Catalano, alongside mellow sounds of indie folk artists Kate Duffy, Frontiers in Photography, and Quiet Titans.

A jazz and blues night (22 July) explores a smooth mix of jazz-funk and soulful grooves with The John Hardaker Direction and Charlotte Jane. And 2SER presents the final Thursday night (29 July) at Winterland with Sydney’s hottest new and unsigned bands.

Friday nights are all about fending off the cold with a little disco fever! A Disco on Ice, complete with giant disco ball, and music from Future Classic DJs kicks off 9 July with Arithmatix!, the disco alias of Sydney DJ Michael Di Francesco - one of the first artists Future Classic ever released on their record label. Spruce Lee hits the decks 16 July with blistering dance floor bombs and heartfelt soul jams. Spruce Lee has remixed local heroes Architecture in Helsinki and legendary Bagraiders, occasionally breaking out his alter ego Toni Toni on the mic while he's DJing – here’s hoping. Loin Brothers - Long John Saliva and Paradise Lost's DJ Silvio join Winterland (23 July); and Sydney DJ Simon Caldwell ( 30 July) plays the final night – he’s worked with the highest order of international talent including artists like Grace Jones, Normay Jay and James Brown.

Saturday nights headline with live music from Feral Media (9 July) featuring wintery soundscapes and warm beats created by a number of leading electronic and ambient musicians - Vorad Fils, Gentleforce, Broken Chip, Textile Audio and Underlapper. Music for Trees (17 July) – a not for profit group who plant trees from money raised at their gigs - showcases live sets from Ray Mann, The Slowdowns, Stiff Gins, The Delroys and The Anon Anons. Karaoke night, with host Tim Jackman, (24 July) is a fun night to pick your favourite tunes and sing the night away - with duets, harmonised backing singers, support dancers and personal groupies welcome.

Winterland finishes up on 31 July with Oxfam Australia's Exchange for Change event where local bands play during a mass clothing exchange. Bring clothing to swap, participate in a hands-on workshop, and listen to a series of talks and panel discussions about labour rights and ethical fashion alongside an ethical fashion parade.

Winterland brings all the magic of a European winter festival to Sydney’s inner west, with loads of fun activities for all ages. Throughout July, the old Eveleigh rail yards will transform with a dazzling indoor ice rink, live music, designer art markets curated by The Finders Keepers team, food stalls serving alpine cuisine, dancing and more to get everyone out and about during the chillier days.

Admission to Winterland is free, and the ice skating rink will be open and in action during the music nights every week, making Winterland the perfect after-work/weekend hang-out for colleagues, friends, and love-birds. Entry onto the ice rink is the cheapest in Sydney - book a session now to ensure your place on the ice (head to www.winterland.com.au – group bookings available).

Winterland is the newest and coolest event on Sydney’s social and school holiday calendar. Winterland offers fun, fresh, low-cost winter activities that will keep visitors of all ages warm and fuzzy throughout July. Embrace the winter atmosphere and be warmed by the sweet aroma of roasting chestnuts, thick Italian hot chocolate, and spicy bratwurst. There won’t be a dull moment - get down to CarriageWorks and get amongst it.

FRIDAY NIGHTS - is a disco on ice, complete with giant disco ball and music from Future Classic DJ’s. Future Classic is record label, music publisher and touring agency based in Sydney. www.futureclassic.com.au.

9 July, Arithmatix is the disco alias of Michael Di Francesco, a well travelled Sydney native who was one of the first artists that Future Classic ever released on their record label. An in demand studio wizz playing in a number of different bands and production outfits, Michael has played with top notch artists like Jamie Lidell and has recently remixed electro-disco favourites Dragonette and Mario Basanov.

16 July, Spruce Lee Having remixed local heroes Architecture in Helsinki and Bagraiders amongst others, Spruce Lee's skills in the studio are well documented. Though we get most excited when Spruce pulls out his Toni Toni Lee persona and gets on the mic while he's DJing. Expect an eclectic selection of tunes ranging from blistering dancefloor bombs through to heartfelt soul jams and hopefully an appearance from Toni Toni on the mic.

23 July, Lion Brothers are Long John Saliva and Paradise Lost's DJ Silvio. Rumored to have been raised in the backroom of a Sydney leather club, a diet of strobe lighting and throbbing sub bass fuzzy disco guitars and exotic synthesizers make up the Loins' musical arsenal. Also releasing on Future Classic, the Loin Brothers have vinyl singles out to date both with heavy international praise and big names remixes from the likes of LA disco fiend Woolfy and London based Mock & Toof.

30 July, Simon Caldwell is one of a handful of Australian DJ's whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Playing records to radio listeners and dancing party people alike since the early 90's, Simon is a founding member of the infamous Mad Racket collective, a party that has been going from strength to strength for over 11 years. Simon has played alongside the highest order of international talent including artists like Grace Jones, Normay Jay and James Brown and is a welcome guest to round out the July Disco On Ice roster.

SATURDAY NIGHTS - Showcase a range of Sydney’s best bands and live acts. Presented in conjunction with Feral Media, Music For Trees, and Oxfam

10 July, Live music from Feral Media, featuring wintery soundscapes and warm beats created by a number of leading electronic and ambient musicians, including Vorad Fils, Gentleforce, Broken Chip and Underlapper. www.feralmedia.com.au

Grand Unifying Theory

May 11th 2010 12:34
Salmon's music is ageless
Rolling Stone - 4 stars

Kim Salmon & The Surrealists

This is an artist defined by his very restlessness, his willingness to both embrace and redefine his own legacy and keep presenting us with work that is as original as it is commercially unviable
Mess Noise

Main man from The Scientists, crony in Beasts Of Bourbon and man of many invention, Mr Salmon, is back after 13 years absense with his new Surrealists LP Grand Unifying Theory.

USA Release
now set for May 17th
UK/Europe Release June 7th.

Salmon is to Perth, Australia, what Nick Cave was to Melbourne; a post-punk trailblazer that's made uncompromising music for 35 years. Grand finds his trio as weird ‘n’ creepy as ever, playing unsettling, pieces with thumping primal rhythms, dissonant noise art collages, art rock anger, freak-out psychedelia, minimalist Can-like repetition, early Stooges free-jazz rock mayhem, and caustic, cacophonous craziness. May he never stop!
The Big Takeover

Kim will be having a Melbourne launch party at Cherry Bar on Saturday May 19th.

The band will be venturing into the USA and doing an exclusive one of show in New York to co-incide with The Scientists' ATP performance later in 2010.

Radio tracks: listen out for Pathologiocal featuring Clare Moore & Dave Graney for a more mellow affair and Childhood Living for flat out rock.

Gyroscope ‘COHESION’

April 19th 2010 03:13
‘COHESION’ DEBUTS AT #3 ON ARIA ALBUM CHART ‘COHESION’ NATIONAL TOUR - JUNE 2010

COHESION:
- noun 1. The act or state of cohering, uniting, or sticking together.

Gyroscope has solidified their position as one of Australia’s premiere rock acts as their fourth studio album, Cohesion debuted at #3 on the ARIA album chart. The album also reached the #1 position on the iTunes album chart.

Rarely has an album title ever rung as true as this most recent offering from Perth rock stalwarts Gyroscope. It was with this spirit in mind and heart that Gyroscope embarked on their most thrilling and all encompassing musical journey to date. No mean feat once it’s taken into account that Gyroscope has been stomping stages as a unit for more than a decade. With their fourth album Cohesion, Gyroscope finally translate the famed rawness of their live show into a recorded, tangible tour de force.

Having packed rooms on their whirlwind and very noisy ‘Some of the Places I Know’ tour throughout March, Gyroscope is now preparing to take things up a notch, on June’s Cohesion Tour. Audiences all over the country are now invited to participate in the collaborative effort that Cohesion has come to represent. To celebrate the release of this rock’n’roll opus, Gyroscope will be shaking up some of the largest and most beautiful venues they have ever been fortunate enough to tread the boards in.

Upon the release of Cohesion on Island Records, both fans and media alike added to the swell of excitement surrounding this much anticipated record. Add to this concoction the fact that the sultry swell of first single ‘Some of the Places I Know’ has been tearing up radio this past month and this tour becomes a thrilling prospect indeed. These dates will see Gyroscope performing not only their tried and true crowd pleasing favourites, but also a hefty helping of selections from Cohesion, a few of them for the very first time.

In true Gyroscope form, true Gyroscope enthusiasts have an opportunity to become a part of the action in advance of the general public. Fans need simply head to www.gyroscope.com.au and sign up to the Gyroscope mailing list before 5.00pm on Wednesday 21st April to take part in a dedicated ticket pre-sale. Participants will be emailed a special code word to take advantage of this excusive mailing list only offer.

The force of Gyroscope live is truly something to be reckoned with; there are few that would dispute this. Years spent ramping it up for audiences from Broome to Bathurst has left Gyroscope brandishing their edgy, unpredictable live show with a seldom matched sense of pride and unity. Drum Media but recently remarked in raptures “this band plays a world class rock show that is only getting better with age.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

Cohesion is one of the strongest records of Gyroscope’s career & is undoubtedly destined to be one of the biggest Australian releases of 2010. Produced by the legendary Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, The Pixies, Eskimo Joe) in Rockfield Wales, the recording of Cohesion has been one of the most rewarding experiences of Gyroscope’s journey. With the result of wonderful shades of light and dark, and of pounding energy and delicate emotion, COHESION, is an album demanding to pick up where 2008’s ARIA #1 album ‘Breed Obsession’ left off. ‘Some Of the Places I Know’ presents a killer hook and honesty, while laced with infectious energy and enthusiasm – a reflection of the band’s studio time.

It’s no time to pretend.

Foster and Allen

FOSTER and ALLEN
Australian Tour 2010

Foster and Allen - Ireland's most famous and successful duo are returning to Australia in
May and June.

FOSTER and ALLEN
Mick Foster and Tony Allen have been performing together for over 30 years, and this will be their 16h trip to Australia.

These charismatic singers have been performing their unique blend of easy listening and folk music all over the world and their popularity is proven by their record sales. Between them they have sold 19 million records, making them one of Ireland's biggest entertainment exports, in the same league as U2, Enya, Boyzone and The Corrs.

Their 25 albums have included the immensely popular The Rambles of Spring, A Bunch of Thyme, Maggie and After All These Years. Their latest CD release FOSTER AND ALLEN - 100 HIT LEGENDS will be released on April 9 through Sony Music to coincide with this tour.

Formed in 1975, this most famous singing duo in Irish music history began working on the local music circuits of Ireland and England. Soon, with their own special brand of music, the duo became hugely popular. In the first year, Foster & Allen recorded their first single, The Rambles of Spring which was a massive hit on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Tony Allen was born in Mount Temple, Ireland, the youngest of nine children. His family loved music and encouraged Tony's interest in it from a very early age. In 1968, he turned professional, playing guitar and singing on a national level with many well-known Irish bands. He met Mick Foster in 1975 and they joined to form Foster & Allen.

Mick was born in County Kildare and began playing the piano accordion at age 13. In 1964, at 17, he won the first of three All Ireland Accordion Championships. The Foster and Allen band accompanying them to Australia includes Moyra Fraser (keyboards), Ollie Kennedy (bass guitar) and Bryan O'Donnell (guitar). After 32 years, their popularity continues to flourish and fans often travel long distances to catch their shows each time they tour Australia.

National Tour Regina Spektor

March 11th 2010 06:14
REGINA SPEKTOR
ANNOUNCING AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND TOUR!

It gives The Frontier Touring Company great delight to announce the return of Regina Spektor to Australia and New Zealand in April this year.

When Regina Spektor's family moved from her birthplace of the Soviet Union to America's Bronx, her musical interests and talent expanded from the genre of classical music toward the vibrancy of pop and rock. These transitions of location and taste are reflected in the classical artistry within her piano composition and distinctive eclectic fusion of sounds. Adding to her repertoire of skills is her ability to play not only the piano but the guitar and occasional percussion as well, rendering her a truly versatile musician.

Regina Spektor's first four albums, the most recent being the gold-certified Begin to Hope, which spawned hit singles Fidelity and On The Radio, were positively received by fans and critics alike and stand testament to her prodigious talent. Last here in 2007, Regina's sold out Australasian tour and international shows saw her fan base grow tremendously.

Regina Spektor's fifth and latest release, Far, continues to captivate listeners with sharp observations about the world around us. An insightful album full of universal appeal which maintains the intimate dialogue that is trademark Regina Spektor, the album peaked in the Top 10 on the ARIA Album chart and continues to win hearts across the nation.

Audiences in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Wellington will be treated to live performances by the charismatic piano-pop darling. Tickets are sure to be in high demand, buy yours early to ensure you don't miss Regina Spektor's charming live show.

TOM JONES

March 10th 2010 06:53
THE FRONTIER TOURING COMPANY
PROUDLY ANNOUNCE TOM JONES AS THEIR 500TH TOUR

It’s no secret that over the years, The Frontier Touring Company has brought some of music’s greatest names to fans in Australia and New Zealand. Now 30 years on from our first tour in 1980, Frontier continues to bring audiences the best in musical entertainment and reach another grand milestone. It gives us great pleasure to announce that our 500th tour is the illustrious Tom Jones.

“I am delighted that Tom Jones is Frontier’s 500th tour” says Michael Gudinski, Managing Director of The Frontier Touring Company. “In our 30 years in the business Frontier has always had a focus on career artists and there’s no doubt that Tom has one of the most legendary careers on record. It’s very appropriate that of all of the tours in our gleaming history, no less than a knight has claimed the 500th spot.”
Tom Jones has toured with Frontier three times since 1995, and last night completed the New Zealand leg of his Australasian tour. His Australian shows kick off tomorrow in the Hunter Valley.

The reviews from New Zealand are overflowing with praise for the phenomenal star and critics seem to have had no reservations about the high quality of his shows, charismatic showmanship and enduring vocal capabilities:

“Sublime. From the moment he walked on to the stage, the personality of Jones filled the auditorium. It would be surprising if anyone in the nearly packed Town Hall felt he was not singing directly to them; such was the strength of his presence.” - Otago Daily Times

“Jones is a born showman… He moves through his versions of country, pop, dance and soul, very much making every song his own.” - The Dominion Post

“Looking as nimble as his fresh-faced ten-piece band, Jones shimmied about the stage, throwing in some cheeky pelvic thrusts and Welsh quips along the way…his famously resonant voice shook the vines.” – NZ Herald

The gifted Welsh performer, aptly also known in his homeland as ‘Jones The Voice’, is now ready to romance audiences across Australia and will sing at a series of arena venues in Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne alongside his A Day On The Green appearances.
With an adoring fan-base that spans all ages and multiple genres, tickets to Tom Jones’ performances have been in high demand. The remaining tickets to all shows are on sale now, buy yours without delay to avoid disappointment.

Every ticket purchased includes a copy of Tom Jones’ Australian platinum selling album 24 Hours, also on sale through Liberator.

BLAKE | Classical Boyband

March 9th 2010 12:44
INTRODUCING THE HAUNTING NEW ALBUM
‘TOGETHER’
FROM “THE CLASSICAL FAB FOUR”

BLAKE

Including the single ‘Beautiful Earth’ - the Earth Hour and World Wildlife Fund anthem

Just three years ago, four young men with a passion for music, found each other on Facebook and decided to form a classical Boyband. After capturing the imagination of the music industry and public alike, the boys signed a multimillion dollar record deal, toured the world, performed for royalty, and defined the genre that became classical crossover. BLAKE-mania had begun.

BLAKE | Classical Boyband

Produced by industry veteran, Nick Patrick, who has worked with Katherine Jenkins and Hayley Westenra, ‘TOGETHER’ is a mixture of classical standards and new arrangements of popular repertoire of the past forty years.

The title perfectly describes the album’s themes of peace, harmony and togetherness including Paul Simon’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, Elvis Costello’s ‘She’, the respectfully haunting ‘Abide With Me’, ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserables as well as the Denise Rich track ‘Unsung Hero’, written for the boys.

The song ‘Beautiful Earth’ was written by BLAKE specifically for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the upcoming Earth Hour celebrations (March 27). At 8.30pm on 27th March 2010, millions of people will show they care about climate change, by turning off their lights for ‘Earth Hour’. Earth Hour 2009 was the world’s largest mass participation event on climate change, with around a billion people in 88 countries, switching off their lights for one hour. In total 1,059 iconic landmarks around the world switched off their lights, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro, The Strip in Las Vegas and the Pyramids in Egypt. Click here for the ‘Beautiful Earth’ filmclip.

Blake recently unveiled their highly anticipated third album, ‘TOGETHER’ in the UK late 2009 which has now gone on to be nominated for the 2010 Classical BRIT ‘Album Of The Year’ award.

The past year that has seen Blake triumph at Wimbledon (at the grand opening of the historic new roof), tour the UK with soprano Natasha Marsh and saw the boys take their svelte look and four of the most exceptional voices to the rest of the World. When in Australia in late 2009, their album ‘And So It Goes’ went straight to #1 on the ARIA Classical chart, beating the legendary Andre Rieu. They also performed at The Melbourne Cup and Spring Racing Carnival and the media dubbed them as “The Classical Fab Four”. Blake will also launch their assault in America later this year, at a very special gala show in New York.

AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA

March 8th 2010 23:26
‘TAPAS’
AN UNEXPECTED (AND TASTY) ALBUM FROM
THE AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA
Released March 5

“What happens when you take 17th century music into a smoky dance hall?” says Paul Dyer artistic director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. “You get something a little daring, sexy, and delicious. You get Tapas!”

“It’s our 21st, so we thought we’d take the Baroque out for a spin. We took baroque dance beats and love songs, and then we improvised till we found a new sound to stir up new emotions.

“Its old music on old instruments, made new. It’s all those gorgeous Brandenburg flavours in a spicy mix – dueling violins, a haunting lirone, spanish guitar, a divine soprano, bells, castanets, harpsichord, there’s even an old school wind machine. It’s ecstatic and highly intoxicating!”

ABC Classics releases the Tapas CD on 5 March and special Tapas performances will take place in Sydney and Melbourne later this month in a rare live concert performance of a Brandenburg recording.

“Our last disc won our 4th ARIA Award and has received rave reviews internationally, including an Editor’s Choice in the prestigious Gramophone magazine. But Tapas is going to take audiences on a whole new journey.”

“Tapas is also a tribute to the music-making of my parents – Mum, a pianist with a gift for improvisation, and Dad, who played the drums. Their influences of classical, swing, jazz and pop have led us to the rhythms of Tapas.”

“We’ve taken 21 years of historically informed performance practice and thrown it into the 21st century. Ladies and Gentlemen, Tapas is served!”
