TWIN SHADOW

November 14th 2011 21:19
We can’t wait for TWIN SHADOW (aka George Lewis Jnr)’s side show, guaranteed to be a shoe-shifting affair filled with the propulsive beats and romantic drama that make his recorded output so great. His debut album, Forget, is a sepia-tinged homage to his childhood, recalling moments from his youth in moods alternately sweet and sinister, but always compelling. Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) produced the album and he does a fine job of making Forget’s 80s-tinged electro-pop sound altogether new. Grab a partner and pretend it’s your school formal: Twin Shadow’s slinky tunes and deep, velvety voice are made for this.

“A magnificently accomplished debut” – BBC

“Twin Shadow has crafted something that’s understatedly, subtly, almost perfect” – NME

“Do believe the hype. Forget is a near-flawless album and certainly one of the most impressive debuts we’ve ever seen” – Pop Matters

Presented by Pedestrian, FBi and Triple R

Stunning debut from Lester

November 1st 2011 21:58
MELBOURNE CHANTEUSE
LESTER THE FIERCE
DELIVERS STUNNING DEBUT

Lester The Fierce is the newest project from Anita Lester, the irresistable chanteuse who is set to release her stunning debut EP 'The Summer Deluge’ this November.

Formerly of Melbourne band ‘Me and the Growunps’, Lester – the visual artist turned performer – describes her music as ‘dark cinematic folk rock’ with the lyrics playing an integral part of Lester The Fierce. A well-known individual in the Melbourne creative scene, Lester has sung at various local and interstate events, including Old Melbourne Gaol (a highly successful Radiohead tribute concert), the iconic Speigeltent and more.

‘The Summer Deluge’ EP comprises of four songs – each bleak but beautiful and full, surrounding the subject in title – the songs portrays the feeling of rain and water in the heat of the Australian Summer. In true form, Lester illustrates her experiences of love and death in a unique and often graphic way. There is a certain discomfort about the subject matter, however, it is adequately balanced by her gritty but classical voice. Recorded by Colin Leadbetter (responsible for records such as Whitely’s ‘Go Forth, Find Mammoth’), ‘The Summer Deluge’ maintains an organic and almost nostalgic feel. The songs are reminiscent of 1960’s folk, but also have the production values to support the cinematic and Kate Bush-esque influences.

UPCOMING SHOW:

MELBOURNE 20th November @ Pure Pop, 4pm (more dates TBA)

COLD CHISEL LIGHTING UP NORTHERN AUSTRALIA AND THE ARIA CHARTS

NEW TICKETS RELEASED FOR MOST SHOWS

After a snarling warm-up in Newcastle, Cold Chisel's Light The Nitro tour kicked off 'for real' last week with massive full houses in Townsville, Cairns and Darwin.

Fans and critics alike hailed these gigs as the biggest and best to ever hit town with unanimous acclaim being heaped on the band's blistering performances.

Cold Chisel has hit the road to restore our faith in classic live rock ... last night's opening of the two-month blockbuster Light The Nitro tour proved Jimmy Barnes and Co are still an explosive musical force
The Daily Telegraph – 14 October 2011

Cold Chisel didn't just light the nitro in Townsville last night, they blew everyone away
Townsville Bulletin – 19 October, 2011

Cold Chisel came out blazing at the Townsville Entertainment Centre with the same passion that first catapulted them to the top of the Australian music charts back in the days when a Kingswood was a flash car and colour television a novelty
Courier Mail – 19 October, 2011

The crowd was at fever pitch ... and the rockers did not disappoint

Cairns Post 24 October, 2011

From the opening kick drum of Standing on the Outside through the sing-along classics Cheap Wine and Khe Sanh to the acoustic melancholy of When the War is Over, this is a show that doesn't disappoint. One of the many highlights has been Tim Rogers (from the tour's special guests You Am I) joining Cold Chisel onstage at some gigs for a searing version of the Circus Animals' classic, Houndog.

In an effort to combat ongoing ticket scalping activity, Cold Chisel are releasing limited numbers of new tickets to most shows in the days leading up to each concert. For indoor arena shows, these reserved tickets are all great seats so fans are urged to contact their local ticket outlets for details. There will also be a further release of new tickets available on the day at most shows which will be available from box offices and by phone only.

And to cap off this big week, the band's brand new compilation The Best of Cold Chisel - All For You debuted at # 2 on the ARIA Album charts making it the biggest Australian album in the country right now!

Dates and venues for the Light the Nitro Tour are below. The tour will be presented nationally in Australia by Triple M and Southern Cross Media, MAX and CMC and by Radio Hauraki and Brent Eccles Entertainment Ltd in New Zealand.

GREY GHOST - EP LAUNCH

October 26th 2011 23:07
GREY GHOST ANNOUNCE OFFICIAL EP LAUNCH!

While currently on tour with hip-hop hooligan ‘360’, GREY GHOST is very happy to announce his official EP launch show Saturday 3 December at The Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy, with special guests DJ MATIK and indie rap 3 piece POLO CLUB.

Debuting with a handful of songs that reiterate a definitive post-rap sound and ideology, Grey Ghost is a collision of the real world and the imagination - where opposing laws of musical physics are defied and then redefined. Futuristic, retro and retro-futuristic all in one; Grey Ghost is rock music you can dance to, mixed with dance music that rocks.

Arising from the death of Melbourne beat experimentalists The Melodics; Grey Ghost is a one-man journey through time, space and sound. From the natural poetry of Jeremedy's urban parlance, to the kind of universal rhythms that awaken our inner primate; this is music, however technological, that remains unmistakably and beautifully human.

Creativity let off the leash.

Grey Ghost’s social conscience and turn-of-phrase bring depth and reality to a musical realm that can often be fantastical and bordering on the strange. His ability to communicate, however using this unbeaten path, is always crystal clear. There is an essential sense of adventure to Grey Ghost, but it connects.

Having already collaborated with producers Jan Skubiszewski and Matik plus an impeccable production team that includes the likes of Forrester Savell and Scott Horscroft; the first-generation of Grey Ghost’s songs are enriched by the chemistry of like minds. The artistic vision of one man, shared and realised by the most esteemed of his peers.

To celebrate the live realisation of this vision Ghosty will bring to life all the colours of his music with the help of African Percussion, ghost dancers, guitars, synths, vocalists, DJs and most importantly - space ponchos!

Tickets are a meagre $10 booking fees and go on sale Monday 31 October.

SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER - THE EVELYN HOTEL, FITZROY

Documentary

George Harrison: Living in the Material World

Directed by Martin Scorsese and with a running time of over three hours it really promises to offer an in depth rendition of Harrison's story from his early life in Liverpool, through the phenomenal success of Beatlemania and beyond including that early act of rock generosity long before the days of Band Aid et al, the Concert For Bangladesh.

Like Scorsese’s 2005 portrait of Dylan, No Direction Home, …Material World comes with a wealth of unseen material that includes home movies and letters, and is similarly split into two parts: basically, the 1960s and everything else. It is a massive achievement to make The Beatles’ story fresh, but Scorsese evidently does so, partly by taking George’s undervalued side, but mostly via an assemblage that hurtles us with visceral force from Hamburg (“the naughtiest city in the world,” recalls George) through the craziness of Beatlemania.

George Harrison
Throughout 2008 and 2009, Scorsese alternated working between his film Shutter Island and the documentary.

Then the documentary premièred at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool on 2 October 2011.

It was shown on HBO in two parts on 5 and 6 October 2011 in the US and Canada.

One of the moments highlighted: George evidently hearing a voice in his head saying, “The Yogis of the Himalayas” during his first acid induced head-trip and then shortly afterwards meeting Ravi Shankar, who had a profound influence over him (despite the fact he was not a yogi or from Nepal or Bhutan in the Himalayas): Of Shankar, Harrison said, “He was the first person who impressed me.”

Scorsese’s documentary consists of previously unseen footage and interviews with wife Olivia and daughter Dhani Harrison, Pattie Boyd, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr who provides a blunt assessment of Harrison when he says, “He was a bag of beads and a bag of anger.”

George’s well known travels to India brought about many cherished influences of Indian culture and spirituality to his music and consequently featured greatly in the expansion of The Beatles’ sound at a critical time in their development. In fact his love affair with India never really ended as it continued on with the Maharishi and the Krishna movement, although Harrison credits Shankar with helping him reconnect to his public.

Also interviewed are Yoko Ono, George Martin, Klaus Voormann and funny man Eric Idle, who explains how in his willingness to bankroll Monty Python’s The Life Of Brian by mortgaging his beloved gothic pile in Surrey. “It’s still the most anyone has ever paid for a cinema ticket.”

Mukunda Goswami, Eric Clapton, Astrid Kirchherr, Tom Petty and the notorious Phil Spector are other fascinating people who provide insight into Harrison’s life and career.

Scorsese says he was attracted to the project because "That subject matter has never left me...The more you're in the material world, the more there is a tendency for a search for serenity and a need to not be distracted by physical elements that are around you. His music is very important to me, so I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist. The film is an exploration. We don't know. We're just feeling our way through."

It has been said the contradictions that ran through Harrison are well known: he was the multi-millionaire who preached detachment from materialism, the green gardener who loved sports cars, the spiritual seeker with a coke habit; Scorsese, a Catholic boy fascinated by gangsterdom, clearly recognises a fellow conflicted soul. It sounds like an entertaining and provocatively informative essay on one of the more fascinating musicians of the last century.

Send an email explaining why you’d like to sit through the documentary in twentyfive words or less to Sound Pet and you may just win a copy of the DVD thanks to our friends at Roadshow.

Jam & Jerusalem

This is the British comedy-drama written by Jennifer Saunders and Abigail Wilson that originally aired on BBC One from 2006 to 2009, with an ensemble cast that included Sue Johnston, Jennifer Saunders, Pauline McLynn, Dawn French, David Mitchell and Sally Phillips. Joanna Lumley and Doreen Mantle feature in earlier episodes.

The title phrase has traditionally been associated with the Women's Institute in England and Wales, who are popularly supposed to devote much time to the making of jam, and for whom the hymn Jerusalem is the unofficial anthem. In America it was known as Clatterford as the program centres on a Women's Guild in a fictional small West Country town called Clatterford St. Mary and the Americans would not necessarily understand the jam or Jerusalem references.

The program has no laugh track and is not recorded before a studio audience so it maintains a level of pathos as well as genuine humour as delivered by the wit and observational satire created by Saunders in work such as Absolutely Fabulous.

Jennifer Saunders’ real life daughters, Ella, Beattie and Freya Edmondson, all appear in the show. Beattie and Freya as the daughters of Saunders’ character, Caroline, also named Beattie and Freya respectively. Ella Edmondson a singer and musician appears performing a song from her Hold Your Horses album.

The story is based around Sal, a local practice nurse and her best friend the surgery's indiscreet receptionist, Tip. Both of whom, given their jobs, are at the centre of community life. Sal however is not a member of her local Women's Guild, but after the death of husband, the local GP, and the loss of her job, she soon joins. Tip is married to a farmer, Colin. The chairwoman of the Women's Guild is Eileen Pike, who always wears her chains of office. Other members include lollipop lady Queenie, elderly church organist Delilah Stagg and Rosie, a cleaner who has an angry and rude alter ego called Margaret.

There are three series of the show and it generated quite a following as it played on Australian screens. Soon it will be available on DVD and those who missed out on the fun of the program will be able to judge for themselves. It certainly would make an excellent present for the mothers and grandmothers who have come from the UK and enjoy the rich characterisations created and the gentle satire of the country village life.

Rabbit Hole

October 2nd 2011 04:13

Director: John Cameron Mitchell
Lead Cast: Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest

Grief is difficult. It doesn’t matter which way you look at it, and by degrees it doesn’t matter what the grief is about – it waits around until there is a moment when it seems less like grief and more like a memory. I doubt you ever really get over anything that causes grief.

Rabbit Hole is a simple film that follows a husband and wife through par of their grieving after the loss of a young son who has been run over chasing his dog into the street. It is a gentle movie. The complexity of the script is quite brilliant on some levels, for example there is a slow emotional burn of the man (Aaron Eckhart) and woman (Nicole Kidman) who have lost their son as they deal with mundane realities.

Do they keep his bedroom as it was? Do they get rid of the treasured dog that he ran out into the street after? It is all very painful to watch at times, but as they come around to accepting that there must be a future beyond the sadness and loss they feel, it becomes happy in a way. Happy in the sense that it shows there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

The film is not too long and is paced well enough so as not to get too turgid. Performances from the lead cast are all extremely good. Nicole Kidman as the wife/mother does a fine job and Dianne Wiest as her mother who has also lost a son under different circumstances is quite lovely to watch. Aaron Eckhart continues to impress with his mixture of sensitivity and masculinity.

It is not likely to be the sort of film people rush off to see because it is after all quite a sad thing, but if you have been feeling down and out this could bring you some hope in so much as it shows the simple and gradual way people take back their lives without falling into the traps that seem quite a cliché – a dalliance outside of the norm for both the husband and the wife do not lead to an inevitable marriage breakdown or great angst.

There are moments where you will understand that loss – be it in the form of a child, a good friend or even a time in your life when things were very different ultimately shares a lot of space shape-wise on the emotional landscape, and this unassuming little film may bring a touch of comfort to your heart in that process.

A CHORUS LINE

Adelaide Festival Centre in association with Tim Lawson presents

A CHORUS LINE

The stunning Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical A CHORUS LINE is coming to Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre for a limited season beginning December 31.Tickets are now on sale online at bass.net.au and from 9am on Tuesday 4 October through all BASS outlets and on 131 246.

This singular sensation and dazzling new production comes direct from Broadway, directed and re-staged by Baayork Lee, with Musical Supervisor Peter Casey, produced by Tim Lawson and TML Enterprises.

A CHORUS LINE was originally conceived, choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, featuring a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. Director Baayork Lee has been involved in A CHORUS LINE since 1975, first as a dancer in the original Broadway cast creating the role of Connie, through to directing the show in the U.S. and now in Australia.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier says ”We are very much looking forward to presenting A CHORUS LINE as our summer musical. It will be a great night out for those of us who loved it the first time around, and it’s exciting to be able to introduce it to a whole new generation of theatre goers”

Producer Tim Lawson says “After seeing the incredible pool of talent at auditions, I know that audiences are going to be blown away by the dynamic talent that will shine in this Broadway classic. An exciting mix of new performers and established favourites”

A CHORUS LINE tells the tale of 17 dancers desperately auditioning for eight stage roles in a musical. Its origin stems from when Bennett started taping interviews with New York dancers sharing their feelings and frustrations.

The original production of A CHORUS LINE opened at the Public Theatre’s Newman Theatre in 1975 and transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre later that year. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score and Book, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It ran for nearly 15 years, closing in 1990 after 6,137 performances. A CHORUS LINE remains the longest running American musical in Broadway history.
