THE DEVILS RAIN AUSTRALIAN TOUR

September 7th 2011 00:55
THE DEVILS RAIN AUSTRALIAN TOUR - NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2011!

In 1977, the dawn of punk, the Misfits were born. This year, over three decades later, they descend on Australia, with a legacy of musical history that has withstood the test of time. The Misfits hit up Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide in November / December.

From inception, the Misfits were primal. Their music was aggressive, confrontational and dangerous with violent lyrics, coupled with timeless vocal melodies bred from 1950’s rock and roll. Immortalizing black and white horror films in their music, the Misfits developed a ghoulish and totally unique persona. It was the early days of anarchy and they had created a rebellion all of their own.

The Misfits have endured hardcore’s heyday as punk rock’s monster squad, a band whose cult following - a coven known as the Fiend Club - inspired them to continue to write, record and tour. Influential rock peers Guns 'n Roses, Metallica, My Chemical Romance, Hatebreed, NoFX and Sick Of It All, are amongst some who have offered musical tributes in ode to the Misfits.

It is the Misfits' all-encompassing and fierce DIY mentality that continues to drive their efforts. They craft their own instruments - from their guitars, amps and drums - down to the studded leather and jackets, and their own elaborate stage sets. Highly collectible and sought after memorabilia featuring the iconic "Fiend Skull" has appeared in films and on television and continues to be worn publicly by actors, musicians and athletes. The impact of the Misfits and their music on pop culture has become a phenomenon in and of itself.

Today, they remain more topical and more sought after than ever before. After a split with former singer Glenn Danzig in the mid 1980's and a decade-long legal battle, the band are now fronted by founding member Jerry Only (Bass/Vocals) with former Black Flag alum Dez Cadena on guitar, and Eric 'El Chupacabra' Arce (formally of Murphy's Law) behind the kit. The Misfits continue to sell out shows and draw thousands of fans night after night around the globe.

One thing is certain, The Misfits are here to stay and once again, every day is Halloween.

KillRockStar Big Dog Entertainment, Blunt Magazine and Tone Deaf bring the Misfits to Australia!
Tickets on sale from Wednesday 14 September. The Misfits release their 7th studio album ‘The Devil’s Rain’ later this year on the ‘Misfits Records’ imprint label.

The song I've written is called “This Universe”. It is my first effort on my home recording system so the quality is just OK but I was keen to share. Either way the intention of the song is there. Lyrics below.

This Universe

In the still before sleep,
I float through the deep,
I lose all emotion,
I bliss in the sweet.

Its here that I pulse,
This precious world,
I’m moving through silence

This universe,
Whispers sweet words
Sings through my bones,
You’re not alone
Love, Love, Love

So let me love with my eyes,
And care with my verbs,
Kiss with my laughter
Listen and learn

And if sometimes the madness
Creeps up behind
I’ll listen to stillness

This universe,
Whispers sweet words
Sings through my bones,
You’re not alone

MOON DUO

Formed in San Francisco in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnson and his partner, Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo’s first two critically acclaimed EPs, Killing Time (2009) and Escape (2010), fused the futuristic pylon hum and transistor reverb of Suicide or Silver Apples with the heat-haze fuzz of American rock ‘n’ roll to create tracks of blistering, 12-cylinder space rock. Now their debut album Mazes, recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Berlin during 2010 as the band prepared to move to the mountains of Colorado, explores a far broader, lighter, sound.

That’s most clear on the dreamy organ and skipping riff of the title track, which recalls the Velvet Underground, or the handclaps and swinging organ bloops over the potent shredding and guttural riff delivered by Johnson in When You Cut: “He is an incredible guitar player,” enthuses Yamada, “He is one of those musicians who has the ability to elicit a guttural, corporeal response in the listener.” Throughout, Mazes is the sound of Moon Duo carving out their own identity, looking to the horizon, and moving forward.

Ripley says that, as a guitarist and songwriter, delineating between Moon Duo and Wooden Shijps “happens naturally. I focus on one project at a time, and the way the two bands operate is very different. And there are certain limitations that Moon Duo is forced to accept, not having a drummer for example, and I really like that. I like the creative challenge of working with limitations. Having done so much home recording cultivates that. Working with one other person is much different from working with four.”

“We wanted to do something in a more ‘rock 'n' roll band’ style, something a bit fuller than our previous recordings.” In terms of recording this meant that Moon Duo “used more tracks on this record, in order to get a denser, layered sound to make this our ‘rock band’ record. I grew up a huge Stones fan, so I've always liked that dense sound, with multiple guitar tracks, percussion, piano, organ - anything you can squeeze into the mix.”

This meant a vastly different recording process to Moon Duo’s first two EPs, which were recorded fast and at home. Mazes was a more drawn-out process, involving proper recording studios for the first time including the trip to Berlin to mix and re-record certain parts and the track ‘Run Around’. “The working title was Die Blumen [the flowers], so going into the mix sessions we kind of felt like it was becoming our ‘Berlin record’, but in the end it retained the stamp of San Francisco and we liked Mazes title better anyway.” And ultimately, Mazes is a definably American record, recorded against the backdrop of the Johnson and Yamada’s move from the Californian coast to the heights of Colorado. “I think a lot of our music has something to do with the mythology of the road,” muses Moon Duo’s Sanae Yamada. And if Mazes is a quest, a journey through American landscape and music, Johnson concludes that its key is “finding one's place in the world; moving forward, and the different paths one takes moving through life, trying to reach various goals, literally moving; love; pain; change. Or just getting by, and making sense of things”.

‘BACK TO BASICS’

vol 1

"As I prepare to release my third album Deep Impressions, I put together this mix to share some of the music that had made an impression on me over my 20 years of collecting. I have drawn extensively from this resource in the creating of my own music, as have many that have gone before me. This is a collection of tunes that have been used in the creative process to make what we know as hip hop. Many of the songs are themselves classics that have a beautiful and still poignant message and vibe. Others contain fleeting moments of beauty that have been captured and reinterpreted to make modern day classics.

Apart form a few sneaky edits (to highlight the moments used by some of the best producers to have turned on a sampler) the tunes are as they appear on the original wax.

This series is dedicated to one of my music inspirations and heroes The Left Rev Eugene McDaniel's who passed away 29th July 2011. If your reading this and don’t know who the great man was, do yourself a favour and get familiar! This is Part 1.... more in the series to follow so stay tuned."

Peace,

KATALYST
