Teasing and tantalizing Australia with brief but dazzling appearances in Sydney and Melbourne last month, global pop superstars Pussycats Dolls will bring their Doll Domination Tour to Australia in May 2009!

Hot on the heels of their second album release Doll Domination (Universal), Pussycat Dolls kick off their 2009 world tour in the UK before heading down under to play all-ages arena shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth featuring the same spectacular production that Europe will see in February.

This scorching band of singer/dancers have quickly become without doubt one of the most popular and globally successful girl groups ever.

There has been no escape from the super catchy Platinum hit “When I Grow Up”, the first single lifted from Doll Domination, quickly followed by the top 10 hit “I Hate This Part”.

Showing their brand of hot, confident attitude, Pussycat Dolls shot to fame in 2005 with the release of their massive debut single “Don’t Cha” featuring Busta Rhymes, hitting number 1 in charts around the world.

Released the same year, their debut album PCD has sales of over 7 million worldwide, claiming Platinum and Gold status in 36 countries. PCD features the huge hits “Buttons”, the Grammy nominated “Stickwitu”, “Beep”, and “Wait A Minute”, helping to bring the album’s Australian sales to 3 times Platinum.

Joining the bill is Lady GaGa. Performing intimate, exclusive club shows in Melbourne and Sydney last September, singer, songwriter, musician Lady GaGa thrilled fans lucky enough to attend! Showcasing her Top 10 album The Fame, the debut release now boasts two infectious Number 1 singles – “Just Dance”, and “Poker Face” which is currently residing at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart.

José González | Tour February 2009

José González
Australian Tour February 2009

In a live setting José and his band are nothing short of mesmerizing, and they return to Australia in February 2009 for a run of intimate theatre and small venue shows.

José González

The music of José González is hardly reminiscent of fireworks and confetti, but that is exactly how his last two albums have been received all over the world. His low-voiced, serious and introverted music has been hugged to death by everyone from the indie crowd to grizzled old folk fans, resulting in gold record sales, festival appearances and several sold out tours in Australia.

In his teens José learned to play classical guitar, but it was some time later whilst serving a tenure in a couple of hardcore bands that he began to produce his own amazing spin on introspective acoustic music. This range of expression, or perhaps better explained as this contradiction in expression, says a lot about José as a person, and about his music. On the one hand it's very accessible, beautiful and speaks easily, and on the other it has a darkness and seriousness that often borders on what might be considered unhealthy.

Kaiser Chiefs' new album

August 26th 2008 00:54
Kaiser Chiefs confirm details of their new album and join the growing roster at Liberator Music.

So, a mere eighteen months since the release of their second album Yours Truly, Angry Mob, which saw Leeds' Kaiser Chiefs have the best selling UK rock album of last year, they are set to unleash their third long-player. The album entitled Off With Their Heads is slated to hit the streets on October 11th and will see them release it on Liberator Music (part of The Mushroom Group) in Australia and New Zealand.

Kicking off with the somewhat incongruous Spanish Metal before launching into Never Miss A Beat the first track lifted from the album, road tested since the band's UK tour last winter is now complete with backing vocals from Lily Allen and New York Pony Club... it sees the band add to their ever bulging bag of hit singles.

Like It Too Much replete with lush orchestral arrangements from Bond & Bjork maestro David Arnold is a rousing classic Kaisers number which sits comfortably alongside the likes of album highlights You Want History and Good Days Bad Days; the latter underpinned by keyboard arrangements conjuring up New York disco morphed into Talking Heads-like brilliance, whilst in its wake creeps up the Kaiserdelic Tomato In The Rain, heralded by its hammond organ and great lyrics.

Half The Truth more than nods to the likes of XTC and comes with a contribution from UK grime artist Sway, meanwhile friend and musical ally Lily contributes backing vocals to Always Happens Like That before the psychedelic bent continues when drummer Nick Hodgson resumes vocal duties on album closer Remember You’re A Girl, sounding like a long lost John Lennon track from the mid-70's.

Off With Their Heads could/should be described as being the first proper Kaiser Chiefs' album with a solid base on which is constructed a series of tracks which come together as an altogether less frenetic and more cohesive piece of work than previous outings and is almost certainly the better for it.

Off With Their Heads produced by Mark Ronson and Eliot James at RAK and Eastcote Studios in London in the Spring of 2008 and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, LCD Soundsystem, Run DMC) at Soundtrack Studios, New York has its home at Liberator Music for Australia and New Zealand and will be readily available on CD, Ltd Edition Vinyl and digital formats on 11th October 2008.

Kaiser Chiefs release the album's first single 'Never Miss A Beat' on October 4th.

On confirmation of the deal Michael Gudinski said "This is THE album of 2008 that you need to listen to…the first single “Never Miss A Beat” is a youth anthem. The pairing of Ronson with the Kaiser Chiefs is inspired.

“There is no doubt that Kaiser Chiefs have already developed a loyal fan base in Australia and New Zealand but their new album “Off With Their Heads” is going to take them to the major league.

“We’re thrilled that the Kaiser Chiefs have signed to Liberator. They are the most important International signing the label has made since its inception and together we’re going to take both the band and the label to new heights in Australia and New Zealand.”

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS IS IN STORES OCTOBER 11 2008 THROUGH LIBERATOR MUSIC

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have got you covered. The Gorillaz masterminds will release the soundtrack to Monkey: Journey to the West - Albarn's circus opera collaboration with visual artist Jamie Hewlett - via XL in September.

If you’ve been looking for an opera album to wedge next to your dad's Andrea Bocelli collection on the family CD shelf, then Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have got you covered.

The album, which is produced by Damon Albarn, was recorded in London and Beijing over the last twelve months and features European and Chinese musicians and singers. It draws upon the music Albarn composed and visuals Jamie Hewlett produced for the Chinese opera production of the same name.

The lyrics are based on ancient Chinese texts and performed in Mandarin. Many Australians will be familiar with the story line as it formed the basis of the legendary TV series Monkey Magic.

With Jamie Hewlett on board (the man responsible for the Gorillaz visuals), the project is sure to be both a visual and aural feast.

Monkey: Journey to the West is out August 23 through XL / Remote Control.

The group were also commissioned by the BBC to create a video animation and accompanying music which will air throughout the station’s coverage of the Beijing Olympics.

If it doesn't read here check it out at You Tube.

DAVID BRIDIE

DAVID BRIDIE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF MAKING MUSIC
AND RELEASES FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN 5 YEARS

"This is the David Bridie you know but with a bigger sound of edgy guitar, whirling keyboards and anthemic vocals alongside his trademark textures, Pacific percussion beats and lyrics of wry social observation." David Sly

"No wonder Bridie is feeling better this year. He's made what might be the best record of his career, 24 years after making his debut with Not Drowning Waving." Noel Mengel

At first inspection, Succumb is a startling departure from David's previous solo recordings. It's more lean and direct, almost abrasive for its confronting guitars and urgent rhythms. But listen closely and familiar signatures abound; lush, textural beds of intricately layered and densely overdubbed sound tapestries.

Not surprisingly, given David's deep social justice concerns, many poignant songs were written in the wake of the 2007 federal election, and some earlier lyrics were adjusted after the election result. "After 12 years under the social conservatives, I see this as a time of possibility, an opportunity to move forward rather than be overwhelmed by despair," says David. "A lot of the questions remain the same, but the beam of light shone upon them is brighter."

While deliberately political, David resists being overtly dogmatic. Rather than chanting slogans or being polemic, he voices concerns that we should all be sharing, though it’s not only political intent that piques the album. Narratives embrace themes that are inherently Australian, in both character and geography, understanding our place in the Pacific, reaching across cultures, seeking ways to stretch across the divide. And always there’s a faint reminiscing of an older Australia, of more simplistic times that shaped the country we grew up in. He says we need to look at where we’ve been to figure out where we’re going, that the old stories and images are important stuff. “It’s too easy to get wrapped up in the here and now,” he warns. “There are so many other good stories to tell.”

The upbeat, positive sound of Succumb is a consequence of the people David worked with and the energy they brought; friends he trusts and respects, none more than guitarist Phil Wales, who has been among David’s closest musical allies over many years. Many other mates dropped in and contributed: Bart Willoughby, Alan and Stephen Pigram, MFTTC cellist Helen Mountfort, Rob Craw. “I loved going to work each day. It was like this long, continuous dinner party."

And there is This Year Is Better Than Last Year – co-written with the Oils' Jim Moginie – which Bridie says reflects his personal frame of mind as well as his response to the change of federal government.

Ultimately, Succumb is the album of a working band, with dynamic contributions from PNG drummer Airi Ingram, Adelaide bass player Paul Cartwright and producer Chris Scallan adding keyboards. David is now looking forward to taking this vibrant song set on the road. “This sound straddles anything else that’s currently happening in music. And to me, that’s important.”

David Bridie will be touring Australia from October 4 including performances at the Australasian World Music Expo in November, which will showcase the region's finest indigenous, folk, roots and world music artists.

hardcore troubadour STEVE EARLE

August 15th 2008 04:52
The Frontier Touring Co.
presents
STEVE EARLE
with special guest
ALLISON MOORER

The hardcore troubadour returns to tour Australia and New Zealand with his latest studio masterpiece Washington Square Serenade under his belt (album released September 2007) and his beautiful songstress wife Allison Moorer to open the shows.

This time around, Steve has chosen to perform solo in the special intimate setting of fully seated theatre venues. Steve Earle’s recorded music career has to date delivered twelve studio albums and five live albums. Steve has also written books both story and poetry and a stage play. In amongst all of this he does what we love him for best; travels the lengths and breadth of the world performing his music live.

Asked how he would like listeners to respond to Washington Square Serenade, Earle, characteristically, is ready with a bold answer. "If you feel like you don't know what America is all about right now, and you want to reorient yourself to what America should be about, it's a really good time to come to New York City," he says. "I needed really badly at this point in my life to see a mixed-race, same-sex couple holding hands in my own neighborhood. It makes me feel safer."

"I've been pretty heartbroken about the way things have gone politically in this country the last few years, and I seriously considered moving someplace else," he concludes. "Then I figured out that I didn't have to leave the country. All I had to do was come to New York." Washington Square Serenade – in its commitment, its values, its musical intelligence and, finally, its very American optimism about the possibilities for a better world – demonstrates why. - Anthony DeCurtis

Allison Moorer is releasing her new album Mockingbird in Australia through The Planet Company Saturday September 6th.

Moorer together with producer and acclaimed roots artist Buddy Miller - has conjured a rich pastiche of the phases of women's hearts, lives, needs and yearnings. Whether it's a dervish take on Patti Smith's “Dancing Barefoot,” a stoic, proud embrace of Kate McGarrigle's “Go, Leave,” a winking nod to the naughty that is Nina Simone's “Sugar In My Bowl” or the elegant survival of her sister Shelby Lynne's “She Knows Where She Goes, the lithe songstress demonstrates diversity, eclecticism and the range of the XX chromosome set.

Since their last trip to Australia, Steve and Allison have relocated to New York City and have settled in Greenwich Village.

Steve and Allison now live on the very Greenwich Village street on which the famous cover shot for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1962) was taken. In that photo, Dylan and his then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo huddle against the cold as they walk along a snowy New York street. It's an indelible romantic image that captures the idealism of the folk revival that was gathering momentum in New York at the time.

Steve Earle's gripping new album, Washington Square Serenade, is a loving tribute to that era, that movement, that music and the city that gave them all a nurturing home. "That period changed pop music," Earle says. "It made lyrics much more important. Rock & roll could have become a subgenre of pop if it hadn't been for that literary aspect, which completely came out of a four-block area in New York City in one brief instant of time."

Steve Earle brings his ‘Washington Square Serenade’ World tour to Australia in November 2008.
