The Killing of Dushasana

February 5th 2010 23:32
SPIRIT of INDIA presents

The Killing of Dushasana

Kathakali Dance Drama 9 (Melb) & 11 (Syd) March 2010The epic and elaborate tale of war and succession, blood and lust - The Killing of Dushasana, reveals all the beauty and brutality of India’s alluring and elaborate history and culture. Catch the enthralling dance-drama for one night only at Sydney’s Seymour Centre on Thursday 11 March (7pm) and Melbourne’s Town Hall Tuesday 9 March (7pm).

Rarely seen outside of Kerela, Southern India’s stunning coastal state; this very special performance tells the story of two families - the Kauravas and the Pandavas, in traditional Kathakali dance style - one of India’s most elaborate and ancient forms of dance.

Performed by the world-renowned Kerala Kalamandalam Dance Company, The Killing of Dushasana is a central episode of the famous Sanskrit epic The Mahabhrata, one of India’s most significant cultural and religious tales. And tells of the great civil war in the kingdom of the Kurus, where modern Delhi now sits. With one hundred thousand verses, the poem is the longest in existence and a cornerstone of Hindu mythology and philosophical thought; the other being The Ramayana.

Brought to Australia by the Nataraj Cultural Centre for the 32nd SPIRIT of INDIA cultural tour, the powerfully artistic dance-drama comes direct from Womadelaide, and comprises 17 dancers, singers, actors, drummers, and make-up artists. Akin to and around as old as Japan’s Kabuki Theatre tradition, Kathakali developed over centuries in Kerala, with elaborate costumes and make up that can take up to four hours to prepare. The performance delivers an artistic impact that needs to be experienced to be fully understood.

The Killing of Dushasana begins with a dice-game - the Pandavas are lured to gamble with their cousins the Kauravas for succession to the throne they are supposed to be sharing. The stakes are high - the Kingdom, and then as a last desperate bid, Draupadi, wife of the five Pandava brothers (married to them all to avoid jealousies), are the ultimate prize. When the game is lost Draupadi is publicly disrobed. Exile for 13 years is punishment for the brothers. But when the Pandavas return the Kauravas refuse to give up a share of the Kingdom.

The centre-piece is the famed Bhagavadgita, containing Lord Krishna’s sermon on selfless action delivered to Arjuna (a Pandava), to urge him to fight when he begins to lose nerve. Considered one of the most important texts in the history of literature and philosophy, it sets out the Indian concept of Dharma, often described as a concise guide to Hindu theology, also considered a practical, self-contained guide to life.

The sermon leads to a great bloody war at Kurukshetra, near Delhi which rages until the Pandava brothers and Lord Krishna are the only contenders left. This is represented in the final scene where the angry Bhima (a Pandava) rips open Dushasana’s body (a Kaurava), drinking his blood.

A phenomenal display of music, culture and dance the performance lasts for two hours, with an interval; and is an Indian feast for the eyes and ears rarely seen at this level of authenticity in Australia. There are two performances at the Womadelaide Festival (6 and 7 March); one at Melbourne’s Town Hall (09 March) and Sydney’s Seymour Centre (11 March) 2010.

The Nataraj Cultural Centre

The Centre, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2010 was set up in 1980 and incorporated as a non profit-making society in 1983. The Centre owes its inspiration to the magnificent India International Centre, New Delhi.

It aims to promote the study and performance of the classical music of India in order to create stronger cultural ties between Australia and New Zealand; and India; and to look after the cultural needs of settlers from South Asia and of other interested Australians and New Zealanders.

The Centre provides facilities for the study of both Hindustani and Carnatic music, by way of short-term courses and workshops by eminent visiting musicians. The Centre’s main arts activity is the SPIRIT of INDIA concerts, which presents India's classical music annually in Australia and New Zealand.

Indian music

Indian music, Hindustani and Carnatac, has been an integral part of the religious and cultural life of India for over two thousand years, with an elaborate musical theory and literature. It is purely melodic – it neither needs nor implies harmony. Unlike Western music, Indian music retains its roots in pure melody and rhythm. Indian classical music is based on the concepts of Raga – the melodic basis of composition and improvisation, and Tala – the rhythmic framework.

The rhythmic texture of this music is highly intricate and ornamented with grace notes. It is lyrical and sensual and aims at creating a definite mood. Since Indian music is not written down, every performance is virtually a new composition, but the musician has to improvise within a well-defined traditional Raga. “Perhaps the most moving and exciting quality of Indian music is the innocence of its rapture. However sophisticated the means… complex the structure... nothing is lost of the child's freshness of wonder.” Yehudi Menuhin

Kerala Kalamandalam

A major centre for learning Indian performing arts, especially those that developed in the southern state of Kerala, Kerala Kalamandalam is situated in the village of Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur district on the banks of the Bharathapuzha. The institution, now a deemed university, was founded in 1930 by poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Raja. Kalamandalam imparts training in classical dance and theatre forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Kudiyattam, Thullal, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, and Nangiar Koothu, besides the traditional orchestra called Panchavadyam. Training is also given in various percussion instruments like chenda, maddalam and mizhavu.

Kalamandalam follows the gurukula sampradayam, the ancient Indian education system based on residential tutelage. The inception of Kalamandalam gave a second life to three major classical performing arts of Kerala, as Kathakali, Kudiyattam and Mohiniyattam were, by the turn of 20th century, facing the threat of extinction under various regulations of the colonial authorities. It was at this juncture, in 1927, that Vallathol Narayana Menon and Mukunda Raja came forward and formed a society called Kerala Kalamandalam.

They solicited donations from the public and conducted a lottery in order to raise funds for this society. Kerala Kalamandalam was inaugurated in November 1930 at Kunnamkulam, and was later shifted to the village of Cheruthuruthy, just south of Shoranur in 1933.The Maharaja of Cochin donated land and a building. Subsequently, a dance department was started to revive Mohiniyattom.

Kalamandalam was conceived to provide training to its students in the Gurukula Sampradaya, an ancient tradition of residential schooling where students stayed with the teachers, sharing the same atmosphere and learning from them the nuances of the arts. Eminent masters were brought to Kalamandalam.

1st ANNOUNCEMNT FUTURE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009

Basement Jaxx XL Recordings, UK

Basement Jaxx are a critically acclaimed UK house music duo, comprised of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, which rose to popularity in the late 1990s. In 1999, they released their debut album Remedy (featuring singles like "Red Alert", "Rendez Vu" and "Jump N' Shout") to wide acclaim. Their follow up, 2001's Rooty, included singles "Romeo", "Jus 1 Kiss" and the iconic "Where's Your Head At?"; while 2003 saw the lads release Kish Kash - which was recognised at the 47th Grammy awards, winning Buxton and Ratcliffe the inaugural Best Electronic/Dance Album award. In addition to their own work, Basement Jaxx are in-demand remixers. Highlights on this front include "4 My People" by Missy Elliott, "Like I Love You" by Justin Timberlake and "She Wants to Move" by N.E.R.D.

N*E*R*D Star Trak, Virgina Beach, USA

With their digital musical palette and vivid imaginations, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo have taken their hip-hop foundation and un-tethered the bounds of pop, bestowing unsuspecting hit records in almost machine-gun-like succession - whether in rap (Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, et al), R&B (Usher, Babyface), pop (Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake) or rock (No Doubt). But N.E.R.D is not the Neptunes. N.E.R.D is a fly-or-die, thrash-around, do-as-you-will, set-your-soul-on-fire alter-ego that subscribes to no rules, and adheres to no agenda. It is Pharrell, Chad and Shay: a trio whose chemistry allows the uninhibited exploration of the sounds, emotions and impulses of self, society, identity and belonging.

CSS Sub Pop Records, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Bursting out of Sao Paulo in 2003, CSS are a group of friends with an unquenchable thirst for good times and indulgence in all things pop and art. Dropping in 2006, their debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy served up danceable electro/rock songs littered with pop culture and sexual references. Easily translating from online environs to live audiences, they quickly became one of the most in-demand live acts from Europe to Japan. Equal parts dance party, urban circus, and complete chaos, the band's unaffected, unbridled joy when performing is their trademark! A tough, street-ready recreation of the frenetic energy of their live shows, their latest album Donkey is summer's ultimate ride - so get on it!

Etienne De Crecy Solid, France

Deep house DJ/producer Etienne de Crecy was a key figure behind Paris' rise as one of the world's dance music hubs during the 1990s. Born in Lyon, he has peddled his talent under several different guises, including Motorbass, La Chatte Rouge, and Super Discount. His first major undertaking, Motorbass, grabbed a cult following soon after its launch in 1991 and not only alerted the world to the rapidly evolving Parisian dance music scene, but also spawned underground favorites like the Motorbass EP, "Transphunk" single and Pansoul album. An irresistible talent, de Crecy has also served up the legendary Super Discount and Tempovision albums, released countless iconic tunes (including "Prix Choc" and "Am I Wrong?") and remixed the likes of Air and Alex Gopher.

Yacht DFA Records, PORTLAND, OREGON, USA

YACHT is a lot of things. It's kind of a band, but it's mostly a genre-and-media-spanning life project founded and led by American, Jona Bechtolt. Bechtolt and new member Claire L. Evans, make anthemic power jams, play them backwards and soak them in nearly-psychedelic cherry cola! A promiscuous genre-smasher since his adolescence, Bechtolt is indie rock's Timbaland and has plied his unique breed of beat-heavy laptop wizardry to endless collaborations. Evans is a media artist and musician who has presented her cosmic PowerPoint performances at MoMA PS1 and The Kitchen, and has frequently collaborated with Bechtolt since 2004. In 2007 the duo played more than 200 shows in 17 countries around the world (including Australia!) and toured with luminaries like LCD Soundsystem and Architecture in Helsinki.

Steve Angello Size Records, Stockholm, Sweden

When Steve Angello released Woz not Woz with fellow Swede, Eric Prydz, in 2004, things changed forever! Released on CR2 Recordings it single-handedly elevated him to become one of the most in-demand producers, remixers and DJs in the world. A prominent member of the illustrious Swedish House Mafia (with close friends Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell), now, in 2008, he has a wealth of worldwide club hits to his name (including Raining Again, Tell Me Why and Not So Dirty) and runs his own highly successful label, Size Records. DJing every weekend non-stop for the last few years, his diverse sets are notorious for keeping crowds electrified and have scored him thousands of adoring fans across the planet. He's an Australian favourite, and he's back for more!

Sebastian Ingrosso
Refune, Stockholm, Sweden

A notorious member of the all-conquering Swedish House Mafia collective, Sebastian Ingrosso is a masterful musical force to be reckoned with! Launching onto the global scene late last millennium, this prodigious, party-heard DJ/producer is world-renowned for both his sublime skills on decks and in the studio chair. Boasting a myriad of club bombs to his name (including anthems like Echo Vibes, Together, Get Dumb and It's True), he has regularly collaborated with studio-mate and best friend Steve Angello to deliver acclaimed tunes and compilations for the likes of Subliminal and Mixmag, and, to top it all off, is also globally revered for his remixing talents - which have seen him flawlessly re-rub lofty icons like of Deep Dish, Moby and Royskopp.

Markus Schulz Coldharbour, Armada, Berlin, Germany

Markus Schulz
dreams of meeting the world - and the way he's going, this dream just might come true! Currently 13 on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Poll, he is a star on the rise and one that's been travelling the world playing his personal brand of dark, moody, melodic trance and meeting as many people as possible. Over the past few years he has crossed the globe countless times; and, via his hugely popular radio show, Global DJ Broadcast, he reaches out to millions with his trademark dark, melodic trance (enriched with beautiful chilled tracks, guitars, and sublime vocals) on a weekly basis. Having started the year with the release of his fourth compilation for Armada Music, 2008 has been a big one for him and to cap it off, he's finally bringing his sound back down under!

JOACHIM GARRAUD
Gum Prod, Paris, France

French superstar Joachim Garraud started his illustrious career in the early 1990s as a DJ at The Boy - an infamous Parisian club attributed with discovering the techno phenomenon in France. A Musicology graduate of the Academy of Music and Percussion, he moved swiftly to production and created his very own recording studio in the middle of Paris. Within its confines, for the last decade he has remixed and composed his way to the top not too mention producing artists like David Guetta, David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Cassius and Moby along the way. Blending DJing and improvisation, Joachim's performances are truly unique. Armed with his keytar, multimedia DVD show and Space Invader friends from outer space, he travels the globe at the speed of sound!

Tocadisco Superstar Records/Toca45, Colonge, Germany

A self-taught studio wizard and DJing phenomenon, Tocadisco is one of Germany's finest, most revered dance music exports in recent years. Hailing from the uber-cool city of Cologne, since the early 2000s he's been relentlessly dropping bomb after bomb on the world's dancefloors. From original tracks like Nobody Likes (the Records I Play), You're No Good For Me and Streetgirls, to his storming remixes of Axwell, The Egg, Booka Shade, New Order and Moby; it's little wonder that Tocadisco has firmly established himself as one of the most popular and exciting artists in the booth today. A firm crowd favourite in Australia, the return of this globetrotting star with the ominous tiger logo is highly anticipated

Christopher Lawrence Pharmacy Music, Los Angeles, USA

Dubbed "A Superstar DJ" by the US's URB and One of The Most Popular DJs on the Global Circuit by DJ Magazine, Christopher Lawrence is one of the biggest, most respected and popular names in dance music today. Once an outsider in a world dominated by European and UK DJs, he has risen to the top of the international dance music heap. Now considered one of the key global players and America's leading dance music export, he regularly plays his tough techno trance sets on main stages at the world's biggest festivals and super-clubs. In the world of international dance culture, there are DJs who are leaders and those who are followers. Christopher Lawrence is a true leader.

LIFELIKE Wall Of Sound, Vulture, Paris, France

Producing first for other artists in the early/mid nineties, Lifelike joined the Parisian label 20000ST in 2001 and released his very first single. Supported by a who's who of DJs and Parisian radio FG, The Soul Of quickly became the classic summer club anthem of 2002. The rest, as they say, is history! On top of DJing all over the world, this gifted French star has remixed everyone from Justice, Chromeo and Sebastian Leger to Belle and Annie; while his collaborative tune with Kris Menace Discolpolis is one of the highest selling tunes of all time.

Mr Oizo Ed Banger Records, Paris, France

Mr. Oizo is the pseudonym of French music producer Quentin Dupieux. Dupieux is most famous for his electro track Flat Beat, which became a hit all across Europe in 1999 for being featured in a series of Levi's jeans TV advertisements. A veteran of two widely acclaimed artist albums (Analog Worms Attack and Moustache (Half a Scissor), his most recent EP, Transexual, has hit the mark with Busy P's taste-making Ed Banger crew, while his remixes for the likes of Kavinsky, Jamelia, Cassius, Scissor Sisters and Calvin Harris have caved minds worldwide! As if his DJ/producer accolades weren't enough, Oizo released his first feature film, Steak, in 2007. Vive la Oizo!

Super8 & Tab Anjunabeats, Helsinki, Finland

Leading the charge of the Scandinavian trance revolution, Finland's Miika Eloranta and Janne Mansnerus (aka Super8 & Tab) have grown to become one of the genre's favourite duos. With monster tunes like First Aid, Helsinki Scorchin, Needs to Feel and Suru to their name, and regular support from icons like Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Tiesto; it's no secret why! Infamous for fusing their tracks with unique, edgy and unusual sounds and vocals, this distinctive Super8 & Tab sound has steadily pushed the talented pair to the forefront of the international trance pack. Dividing their time between DJing, the studio and their own worldwide radio show on DI:FM, their long-awaited artist album is due to drop any minute.

And many more to be announced!

SWEET DISPOSITION SINGLE LAUNCHES

The Temper Trap

Respected Melbourne four piece The Temper Trap return to the live front to celebrate the release of their latest single, Sweet Disposition, taken from their forthcoming debut album. Recently recorded in Melbourne with esteemed UK producer Jim Abbiss (Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, Arctic Monkeys) the record’s rich and sophisticated soundscapes are nothing short of epic.

The band have emerged from the recording session as a tight knit creative force, producing a dynamic single that is a giant leap from their earlier EP of two years ago and undeniably delivers on all of their promise.

The single launches are the beginning of a massive twelve months ahead for the boys with a busy summer touring schedule of festivals and overseas shows confirmed.

The Temper Trap will have a limited edition 12" available at these shows with remixes from such underground luminaries as Curtis Vodka (Bjork, Silversun Pickups, Kid Sister) and Pocketknife (Spank Rock, David Bowie, Feist, Sufjan Stevens) for this release.

LUCINDA Williams' new album

LUCINDA WILLIAMS NEW ALBUM
LITTLE HONEY
TO BE RELEASED BY LOST HIGHWAY ON OCTOBER 11

Lost Highway will release Little Honey, the new album from three-time Grammy Award-winner Lucinda Williams on October 11.

Little Honey is Williams' ninth studio album and easily her most eclectic in a recording career that began in 1978.

After 30 years of writing, performing and recording, Williams is in the middle of her most prolific period to date. In February of 2007, Williams released the Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed West. Just over a year later Williams returns with new sounds, familiar styles, new friends, renewed optimism and thought-provoking sentiment on Little Honey.

The 13-songs on Little Honey showcase all of the elements that have made Williams one of the most celebrated living songwriters. She revives the spirit of the delta on Heaven Blues, emanates beauty and heartache on The Knowing, duets with Elvis Costello on the classic mini-drama Jailhouse Tears, sings poetry atop subtle horns on the epic Rarity, and exudes the country blues on Circles And X's, which she wrote in 1985. Williams dives deeper into her rock roots than ever on tracks such as the album’s opener Real Love, the intense, raw power of Honey Bee and the grand crescendos of Little Rock Star, where she draws on her personal wisdom from experience in a sincere letter to younger artists who walk the fine line between success and self-destruction.

Little Honey was produced by Eric Liljestrand, who engineered Williams' West, and Tom Overby. Along with Costello, Little Honey features guest vocals by Matthew Sweet, Suzanna Hoffs, Jim Lauderdale, Tim Easton and the legendary Charlie Louvin. Williams is backed by her solid road band Buick 6, which includes mainstay Doug Pettibone on guitar, with David Sutton (bass) and former Eels' members Chet Lyster (guitar) and Butch Norton (drums). Keyboardist Rob Burger, who also played on West returns for the Little Honey sessions.

ASH GRUNWALD

ASH GRUNWALD
FISH OUT OF WATER

NATIONAL TOUR

Ash Grunwald is back, all set to deliver his most adventurous & exciting release yet; the full length studio album FISH OUT OF WATER, in stores August 30. The album, which he collaborated on with respected beats master Countbounce from TZU features an exhilarating hybrid of musical styles, infused with beats and grooves, junkyard percussion, scorching riffs and Grunwald's trademark deep and strong vocal that is bound to impress and delight fans of quality music.

The Devil Called Me A Liar, the first single from the album, is a live favorite for Grunwald, featuring a grappling guitar riff that arose out of a particularly productive jam session. Producer Countbounce's description of Ash is that he’s an enthralling riff writer.

Fans of Ash Grunwald will already be familiar with his strong sense of musical adventure, and with Fish Out Of Water he has truly let his hair down, pushed all the boundaries and let rip in a major way. The upshot? A career highlight. And further proof that this Australian performer is bringing blues and roots to a whole new generation.

Triple J seem to agree, adding the track to rotation, and coming onboard to co-present Grunwald's upcoming national tour, which kicks off late August in Darwin before heading to WA, and then across to the East coast thru September and October. Tickets on sale now.

FISH OUT OF WATER WILL BE IN STORES SATURDAY AUGUST 30
