3Penny Opera

July 30th 2011 23:15
Sydney Theatre Company and Asteron present
the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera production of
Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill's

The Threepenny Opera
Text by Raimondo Cortese.
Lyrics by Jeremy Sams.

1 to 24 September 2011. Opening Night: 3 September 2011 at 8.00pm.
Sydney Theatre, 22 Hickson Road, Walsh Bay

Featuring an exceptional cast including Paul Capsis (as Jenny), Jolyon James (as Tiger Brown), Luke Joslin (as Filch), Lucy Maunder (as Polly), Amanda Muggleton (as Mrs Peachum), Eddie Perfect (as Macheath) and Grant Smith (as Mr Peachum) the Brecht-Weill musical masterpiece, The Threepenny Opera, is at Sydney Theatre from 1 to 24 September 2011, opening Saturday 3 September.

The most notorious anti-hero to storm a stage, Macheath - or Mack The Knife as he's known on the streets - is the original city criminal who's never met a law, a woman or a cop he couldn't break. That is until he challenges the supremacy of the Beggar King Peachum and his empire of manufactured woes. With Peachum and cunning cop Tiger Brown on his case the last thing Mack needs is a couple of molls competing for ownership of him. But when it comes to the ladies, this Lothario throws caution to the wind and leaps in head first.

Taking John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728) as the basis for a critique of the greed, lust, evil and corruption they considered to be at heart of bourgeois society, Brecht and Weill incorporated the danger and hedonism of 1920's Berlin music and cabaret to create a 20th Century milestone of musical theatre. At the heart of the Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera co-production, directed by Michael Kantor and conducted by Richard Gill, is the raw, jazzy and intensely beautiful music.

Raimondo Cortese's vivid adaptation, featuring lyrics by Jeremy Sams, captures that spirit of the Weimar republic at its height, while superimposing the action onto recognisably Australian streets.

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Threepenny Opera as part of Berlin Sydney: a program of theatre, music, cabaret and exhibitions inspired by 20s and 30s Berlin held at leading arts venues across Sydney.

Tommy Dean: Occasionally popular

April 6th 2011 07:35
Tommy Dean: Occasionally popular.
Consistently hilarious!

America's greatest export to Australia, Tommy Dean, exposes the ups and downs of the ever changing acclaim for comedy across a gut-busting four nights at the Sydney Comedy Festival Tuesday 12 April – Friday 15 April 2011 at 7:30pm at the Factory Theatre Marrickville.

Venue: Factory Theatre
Date: Tue 12th – Fri 15th April
Time: 7:30pm
Tickets: $29.90 Full / $24.90 Conc / $24.90 Groups 6
Bookings: 02 9020 6966

Comedy is comedy. But when does comedy become bad taste? With the recent events globally, in Japan and on our own shores in Queensland, there has been many a joke made at the expense of disaster. Dean creates an evening that delves into the ebb and flow of comedy and a look at what happens when jokes become painful.

Being a man who knows his way around the world wide web, Dean also explores the trials and tribulations of the online celebrity. Be it at home, work or just out and about with mates, everyone wants to be popular. To feel that moment of people hanging off your every word, watching to see if you’ve entered the room or just the amount of followers you have on Twitter.

The time and effort are simply too much for Tommy Dean. For his show, Dean delivers a night of revelry on why we shouldn’t try so hard. The thoughts and things one can get up to when the eyes of the world are not staring at you. You have to work to be constantly popular…but he has found it is enough to be occasionally popular.

Since arriving in Australia more than 15 years ago Tommy has become one of the most respected and sought after comics in the country.

Dean has the unique edge of being an American who understands Australia, its audiences and above all what makes us laugh, performing some of the most unique, well crafted and incisive standup comedy available in Australia.

In much demand on the live circuit, Tommy is a regular headline act in comedy venues around Australia and has performed in many of the leading comedy clubs in the USA. His vast experience encompasses New Zealand, North America, Europe and South East Asia

OMAR SOULEYMAN

OMAR SOULEYMAN

Syrian street culture overdriven casio-craziness strained through the timeless folk world of the middle east. Desert sands cavorting to the rapid-fire keyboard mania of Dabke.

Your world shifts around you as the dunes of Omar's musical genius sweep all before in a musical sandstorm.

Worlds are compressed as the streets of Syria erupt under your feet in a infectious hyper-mesh that will leave you swirling.

SATURDAY 12 MAR - Sydney ANNANDALE HOTEL
plus special guests ALPS & DJ JAMES LOCKSMITH

Tickets from - annandalehotel.com venue and consume.oztix.com.au
LEH JANI video HERE

Omar Souleyman is a musical legend from Syria. For the past 15 years, he and his group have emerged as a staple of folk-pop throughout the country, having issued more than five-hundred studio and live-recorded cassette albums which are easily spotted in the shops of any Syrian city. Hailing from the rural Northeastern city of Ras Al Ain, Souleyman began his musical career in 1994 with a small group of local collaborators that have been with him from the start. The group tirelessly performs concerts throughout Syria and has accepted invitations to perform abroad in Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Lebanon.

The myriad musical traditions of the region are evident in their music, which reflect the sounds of Syria, Iraq, Turkey and the sizable Kurdish population. Expect the ultimate party music. Omar's superb and varied vocal stylings feature over high-octane Syrian "Dabke" (the regional folkloric dance music) and a host of other styles. Frantic Arabic keyboard solos provided by the incredible Rizan Sa'id intertwine with reeds, stringed instruments and percussion. This is a rare opportunity to glimpse into Syrian street-level folk-pop - a phenomenon seldom heard in the West in this form. Experience the genuine sounds of Syria and the Middle East.

The Now now
- spontaneous music festival

The 10th Annual NOW now Festival of Spontaneous music is set to blow Sydney away from 21st January 2011.

The Now now was last in the city in 2007 – its last three years have been hot-house music festivals in the Blue Mountains. This year it returns to Sydney to share the fun and games.

The festival, which boasts a slew of international music icons - as well as stars of the Australian music scene - will be held at three inner west venues from the 21st to 28th January: The Red Rattler Marrickville, Serial Space Chippendale and the ‘secret’ People’s Republic of Australasia.

The Now now has undergone much change over the decade but its unique spirit of exploratory improvised music remains.
There are many debuts as well as popular returns at this year’s festival which again features eclectic programming across all genres: multimedia, installations, verbal, electronic and more. What they have in common is sense of adventure and an embrace of the moment.

Among the fantastic ‘traditions’ again on the card is latest incarnation of the legendary SPLINTER ORCHESTRA... a full scale 36-piece big band featuring an improvising musical Who's Who of the fest - with musicians aged from 16 to 66 - all together… and present!

Featured artists include electronics virtuoso YAN JUN from China, Brisbane's SKY NEEDLE, local trio ROIL (Chris Abrahams, Mike Majkowski & James Waples), Tassie's UNTERMORAST (featuring Tim Panerotos with processed/looped bazouki and Matt Warren with processed vocals), recent Walkley Award winner, radio presenter and experimental musician JOHN BLADES (dragon generation word salad), Hollis Taylor with violin plus field recordings, The UNAUSTRALIAN STRING QUARTET and the CLEPTOCLECTICS.

Other visiting international artists include Argentina's experimental film/audio artist ALAN COURTIS, pianist MAGDA MAYAS from Germany, SCOTT SINCLAIR from Berlin, Scandinavian band THE THING, Canadian combo DUO VULGARITÉS and many more.

There’s enticing international and local collaborations on offer too, such as MAGDA MAYAS with Tony Buck and then with locals Monika Brooks (accordion) and Laura Altman (clarinet), Swiss synth star JASON KAHN with Brisbane’s Matt Earle and Adam Sussman, YAN JUN with Alex White among others. Plus sax maniacs JIM DENLEY and ROSALIND HALL, open circuit artist PETER BLAMEY, cornet Kiwi GERARD CREWDSON & NZ vocalist NOEL MEEK.

It's EXTREME ART. And it's Sydney's own in January 2011
