February 5th 2010 22:56
Chinese Gardens
Chamber Music Festival 2010

Musica Viva is pleased to support the Chinese Garden Chamber Music Festival

Following on from the success of the first ever Chinese music festival in Australia in February 2009, the 2010 Chinese Garden Chamber Music Festival will be held:

February 4th to 6th in Sydney’s Chinese Garden of Friendship (Download Brochure)

We are proud to announce that 2010 will feature three of China’s masters of the erhu, pipa and guqin, Xing Lu, Tong Ying and Jin Wei. These extraordinary, virtuosic musicians will join prominent Australian artists in performing Chinese and Australian works, both ancient and modern. You will hear some of the world’s best chamber musicians from both countries in the intimate and magical environment of the Chinese Garden including the Orava String Quartet, Chinese Australian Music Ensemble, cellist Patrick Murphy, percussionists Claire Edwards, Kevin Man and Timothy Constable and The Sydney Chinese Music Ensemble.

There will be six concerts over the three days – three ‘yum cha’ concerts, all beginning at 11.30am, and three evening concerts at 7pm each night. Tickets will also include stimulating pre-talks before evening concerts and an excellent Chinese meal. Wine will be available.

Only 147 tickets are available for each concert and bookings can be made through the Musica Viva box office on 1800 688 482

More information about the festival HERE

John Huie
Artistic Director

"John Huie is an Australian musician and arranger that has spent some considerable time in Hong Kong and China researching various world music styles, including film soundtracks for Golden Harvest and also a commemorative piece for the 1997 handover. Now based in Shanghai, he has put together a crack band of local musicians to recreate many of the 1930’s jazz songs that were the soundtrack to the city in its pre-war heyday. “Shanghai Jazz – Musical Seductions From China’s Age of Decadence” is the sublime result."

"After moving to Shanghai in 2002, he spent three years researching and reproducing the authentic songs and musical style of Shanghai in the 1930s. The albums Shanghai Jazz 1 and Shanghai Jazz 2, were released by EMI. Huie then continued to write for small ensembles using a combination of traditional European and Chinese instruments, which resulted in the release of New Shanghai, also with EMI.During this time he wrote a number of film scores including The White Countess by legendary New York based film duo Merchant Ivory." Venue: Chinese Gardens, Darling Harbour, Sydney

Dates: 5, 6, 7, & 8th February, 2009

Producers: Chinese Chamber Music Company | Musica Viva | Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority

February in Sydney is the perfect time to be sitting in the magical setting of the Chinese Gardens, Darling Harbour, and listening to chamber music. This was the inaugural festival which means that we will be treated to this event, hopefully, for many years to come. The music began just before dusk and on a gorgeous summer evening the Chinese Gardens couldn’t have looked more beautiful.

The proceedings began with a ‘Greeting to Country’ and the Festival was opened by the Governor of NSW Professor Marie Bashir AC. The Artistic Director of the Festival was John Z. Huie who is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium High School and has studied under Carl Vine. He lived for 15 years in Hong Kong, from 1991, studying the art of Chinese Chamber music. He was commissioned by the Hong Kong government to compose a piece, which he called “The Honourable Retreat”, for the handover from British rule back to China on 30th June, 1997. In 2002 he moved to Shanghai to research the complexities of that city's authentic songs of the 1930’s, later composing an album Shanghai Jazz, produced by EMI, and for which a tribute concert was held recently to honour his contributions. He has also written film scores, choral works, and produced, composed, and performed in various music ensembles.

Chinese instrumentalists performing with traditional instruments were a delightful highlight to the festival and the opening piece was Fang Yu on the ‘guqin’ which is one of the worlds oldest instruments.

Guqin

The Shanghai Chinese Music Ensemble played a traditional Chinese folk song “Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye”, (English translation “Night Along The River”) with other traditional instruments and Lulu Liu played a ‘pipa’ solo called “Ospreys Sporting with Water”. In the second half of evening The Chinese Australian Chamber Ensemble with guest artists Professor Wang Zheng Ting (sheng)and Tony Wheeler (zhong ruan) played a traditional Chinese New Year piece. To round out the evening Australian pianist Michael Kierin Harvey performed “Goldfish” by Debussy and “Mephisto Waltz No.1” by Liszt.

Pipa

Not all the music on offer was instrumental. We were treated to the pentatonic sounds of ‘pingtan’, a traditional Suzhou (Chinese) Opera, which has harmonies in pentatonic scales that align with the ancient instruments of China. Sung in Chinese and a little foreign to the western ear it was accessible because of its use of the pentatonic scale, quite an experience.

The music in this festival is out of the ordinary and the opportunity to experience the worlds’ pre-eminent practitioners playing instruments thousands of years old in their design is exciting and new to Australia. If you missed the Inaugural Chinese Chamber Music Festival put it in your diary for next year. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Peter McGill.

The Beauty Queen of Leenane

January 25th 2010 23:00
The Beauty Queen of Leenane
by Martin McDonagh

20 February to 13 March 2010.
Opens 22 February 2010 at 7pm.

Wharf 2, Sydney Theatre Company, The Wharf, Pier 4, Hickson Road.

With an exceptional cast comprised of Judi Farr, Eamon Farron, Darren Gilshenan and Mandy McElhinney, The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh is at Sydney Theatre Company’s Wharf 2 from 20 February, opening 22 February.

Directed by Cristabel Sved, the production is part of the Company’s extensive 2010 Education Program (STC Ed), with evening performances open to both school groups and the general public.

Maureen, a middle-aged spinster, lives with her elderly, manipulative mother Mag. Her sisters have flown the nest, escaping the drab family home but Maureen remains at home, trapped in a dysfunctional relationship with her mother. The arrival of an invitation sparks hopes of a last-chance romance and offers Maureen the prospect of an escape to a new life. Things might be looking up for her, but not if her iron-willed mother has anything to do with it.

Loaded with savage irony, surreal humour and a touch of melodrama Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane looks at the malevolence of people leading hopeless lives.

The cast is well-known to Sydney audiences, particularly for recent performances in STC Main Stage productions. Judi Farr was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award for her performance in John Doyle’s The Pig Iron People. Darren Gilshenan is currently on stage in Tot Mom (closing 7 February) and starred in last year’s Elling. Mandy McElhinney has just returned to Australia following STC’s triumphant tour of A Streetcar Named Desire to Washington and New York.

Cristabel Sved has worked as a director, actor, teacher and dramaturg with companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Griffin Theatre Company, Darlinghurst Theatre Company, Red Stitch Actor’s Company and NIDA. She holds a BA (Hons) in Performance from UWS and is a graduate of NIDA’s directing course. Cristabel was a founding member of Darlinghurst Theatre Company, was Griffin Theatre Company’s inaugural Affiliate Director in 2009 and has been a member of the B Sharp Artistic Committee since 2008.

The Main Ingredients & Funkdafied step back in time and dig deep in the crates for the album launch of ‘Strange Breaks and Mr. Thing’ - a five part ultimate breaks and beats series paying homage to the popular ‘Strange Games’ Series on the BBE label.
Get ready to be educated as class is in session!

Known popularly as Mr. Thing, this supreme DJ first started spinning in 1987. The first Hip Hop record I bought was Streetsounds Crucial Electro and my first import 12" was BDP's POERY but my first actual record was - (cringing) Adam & The Ants "Kings Of The Wild Frontier"

From these humble beginnings Mr. Thing went on to become one the World's finest DJ's as testified by the following accomplishments.

DMC TEAM WORLD CHAMP (SCRATCH PERVERTS) 1999
DMC UK CHAMP 2000
DMC WORLD 3RD PLACE 2000

Mr. Thing doesn't stand still with spinning records. Alongside amassing a fantastic record collection from digging trips across every continent, he practiced his production skills and has gone on to remix and produce records for a credible assortment of UK acts.

BBE and Mr. Thing have known each other for over 10 years and it was just natural that this collaboration had to happen. The result is Strange Breaks and Mr. Thing a five part ultimate breaks and beats series and a homage to the popular Strange Games Series on the label.

I wanted to do an extension of my 'Anorak' series of mixtapes, which were already a homage if you like to Kon & Amir, Muro & the Conmen etc, but put some stuff out there that covered all bases of music & breaks from the ultra rare to some reasonably common stuff people might have passed up before!

Mr. Thing is a world class DJ capable of rocking any party in any town and has performed/toured with DJ Jazzy Jeff, J Live, Marley Marl, Beastie Boys, DJ Premier, DJ Vadim, Run DMC, Slum Village, Mark B & Blade, KRS One and Jehst.

The Song Company
A Free-Range Christmas
Sunday 29 November at 3pm

More and more, music lovers are discovering the delights of the Song Company. And if they're not, they should be - The musicality of the songs and their arrangements, as well as the choice of repertoire itself, is exceptional - something the Song Company is renowned for. But also significant in this concert is a focus on simple, old-fashioned storytelling - The performers themselves have good, sometimes beautiful voices and deliver the repertoire with charisma and humour. Never boring, this concert is a celebration of Christmas, of story-telling and of faultless music.
State of the Arts, December 2005

In celebration of the festive season, Big Notes presents The Song CompanyÂ’s A Free-Range Christmas. This Christmas celebration for all creatures great and small is playing at Riverside Theatres on Sunday 29 November 2009 for one performance only.

This reprise of the very popular Christmas show, A Free-Range Christmas, by the 'un-embarrassable' Song Company stars Clive Birch, Mark Donnelly and Richard Black.

A Free-Range Christmasutilises old fashioned story telling with a modern twist. It is a humourous family friendly performance featuring serious and beautiful music. In A Free-Range Christmas, The Song Company is let loose in a menagerie of animals from around the world, domestic or wild, alive or extinct, big and furry or small and slimy. Wolves, oxen, cats and dogs, tigers and lambs, donkeys, ducks, dogs and doves all join in for this extravaganza of songs, carols, stories and poems delivered by The Song Company in its inimitable way.

Formed by Charles Colman in 1984, The Song Company is a group of six full-time professional singers led by internationally acclaimed Artistic Director, Roland Peelman. The Song Company aims to create a distinctive and dynamic new voice, relevant to the audiences of today and tomorrow. A Free-Range Christmas reflects this with their broad repertoire of songs, carols, stories and poems, from early music, through to modern classical vocal arrangements, which include Nuns of Chester Carol, Animal Songs, Carols from France and Winnie the Pooh.

Adults will enjoy this as something for the kids, while children will detect that undisguishable thread of coy adult humour throughoutÂ… the Song Company again showed themselves not only unembarrassable, but brilliantÂ… as one of Australia's most outstanding music ensembles, they scrimp and save, helping young composers and spreading delight with an always-generous spirit
