THE SOUNDS OF WINTERLAND HEAT UP CARRIAGEWORKS’ NIGHTS

A series of 18 free live music events featuring over 100 local and emerging artists

There’s no excuse not to make the most of the winter nights (6-10pm) this July, with a massive line-up of free live and themed music nights at CarriageWorks as part of Sydney’s cutting edge arts centre’s first-ever Winterland festival (5-31 July, 2010).

Slowdowns
Get off the couch and down to Eveleigh for Sydney’s biggest indie music, arts, food, and skating winter festival, to check out some of Sydney’s newest and coolest emerging bands, or hit the ice for Winterland’s evening skate sessions to cool tunes. Skate/dance the night away under CarriageWorks giant disco ball and hear the hottest bands and DJs heart-warming sounds heating up the wintry nights throughout July.

Highlights of Winterland’s hot live showcase include indigenous country and western duo Stiff Gins, pop/folk singer Rosie Catalano, indie/folk inspired band The Preachers, acoustic crew Leroy Lee, alt country cowboy band The Slowdowns, and Ray Mann the troubadours of soul.

Every Thursday night emerging and established bands will provide the sounds of winter. Themed nights include alt country (8 July) with the likes of Sydney newcomers tipped the 'next big thing' - The Preachers, old timey hillbilly band The Lurkers, fiddle fuelled gypsy pop group Wil Massey and The Ghost Trio, and singer/songwriter Charlie Trindall.

Winterland goes unplugged with an acoustic/folk night (15 July) staring Triple J Unearthed’s winner Leroy Lee, and Rosie Catalano, alongside mellow sounds of indie folk artists Kate Duffy, Frontiers in Photography, and Quiet Titans.

A jazz and blues night (22 July) explores a smooth mix of jazz-funk and soulful grooves with The John Hardaker Direction and Charlotte Jane. And 2SER presents the final Thursday night (29 July) at Winterland with Sydney’s hottest new and unsigned bands.

Friday nights are all about fending off the cold with a little disco fever! A Disco on Ice, complete with giant disco ball, and music from Future Classic DJs kicks off 9 July with Arithmatix!, the disco alias of Sydney DJ Michael Di Francesco - one of the first artists Future Classic ever released on their record label. Spruce Lee hits the decks 16 July with blistering dance floor bombs and heartfelt soul jams. Spruce Lee has remixed local heroes Architecture in Helsinki and legendary Bagraiders, occasionally breaking out his alter ego Toni Toni on the mic while he's DJing – here’s hoping. Loin Brothers - Long John Saliva and Paradise Lost's DJ Silvio join Winterland (23 July); and Sydney DJ Simon Caldwell ( 30 July) plays the final night – he’s worked with the highest order of international talent including artists like Grace Jones, Normay Jay and James Brown.

Saturday nights headline with live music from Feral Media (9 July) featuring wintery soundscapes and warm beats created by a number of leading electronic and ambient musicians - Vorad Fils, Gentleforce, Broken Chip, Textile Audio and Underlapper. Music for Trees (17 July) – a not for profit group who plant trees from money raised at their gigs - showcases live sets from Ray Mann, The Slowdowns, Stiff Gins, The Delroys and The Anon Anons. Karaoke night, with host Tim Jackman, (24 July) is a fun night to pick your favourite tunes and sing the night away - with duets, harmonised backing singers, support dancers and personal groupies welcome.

Winterland finishes up on 31 July with Oxfam Australia's Exchange for Change event where local bands play during a mass clothing exchange. Bring clothing to swap, participate in a hands-on workshop, and listen to a series of talks and panel discussions about labour rights and ethical fashion alongside an ethical fashion parade.

Winterland brings all the magic of a European winter festival to Sydney’s inner west, with loads of fun activities for all ages. Throughout July, the old Eveleigh rail yards will transform with a dazzling indoor ice rink, live music, designer art markets curated by The Finders Keepers team, food stalls serving alpine cuisine, dancing and more to get everyone out and about during the chillier days.

Admission to Winterland is free, and the ice skating rink will be open and in action during the music nights every week, making Winterland the perfect after-work/weekend hang-out for colleagues, friends, and love-birds. Entry onto the ice rink is the cheapest in Sydney - book a session now to ensure your place on the ice (head to www.winterland.com.au – group bookings available).

Winterland is the newest and coolest event on Sydney’s social and school holiday calendar. Winterland offers fun, fresh, low-cost winter activities that will keep visitors of all ages warm and fuzzy throughout July. Embrace the winter atmosphere and be warmed by the sweet aroma of roasting chestnuts, thick Italian hot chocolate, and spicy bratwurst. There won’t be a dull moment - get down to CarriageWorks and get amongst it.

FRIDAY NIGHTS - is a disco on ice, complete with giant disco ball and music from Future Classic DJ’s. Future Classic is record label, music publisher and touring agency based in Sydney. www.futureclassic.com.au.

9 July, Arithmatix is the disco alias of Michael Di Francesco, a well travelled Sydney native who was one of the first artists that Future Classic ever released on their record label. An in demand studio wizz playing in a number of different bands and production outfits, Michael has played with top notch artists like Jamie Lidell and has recently remixed electro-disco favourites Dragonette and Mario Basanov.

16 July, Spruce Lee Having remixed local heroes Architecture in Helsinki and Bagraiders amongst others, Spruce Lee's skills in the studio are well documented. Though we get most excited when Spruce pulls out his Toni Toni Lee persona and gets on the mic while he's DJing. Expect an eclectic selection of tunes ranging from blistering dancefloor bombs through to heartfelt soul jams and hopefully an appearance from Toni Toni on the mic.

23 July, Lion Brothers are Long John Saliva and Paradise Lost's DJ Silvio. Rumored to have been raised in the backroom of a Sydney leather club, a diet of strobe lighting and throbbing sub bass fuzzy disco guitars and exotic synthesizers make up the Loins' musical arsenal. Also releasing on Future Classic, the Loin Brothers have vinyl singles out to date both with heavy international praise and big names remixes from the likes of LA disco fiend Woolfy and London based Mock & Toof.

30 July, Simon Caldwell is one of a handful of Australian DJ's whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Playing records to radio listeners and dancing party people alike since the early 90's, Simon is a founding member of the infamous Mad Racket collective, a party that has been going from strength to strength for over 11 years. Simon has played alongside the highest order of international talent including artists like Grace Jones, Normay Jay and James Brown and is a welcome guest to round out the July Disco On Ice roster.

SATURDAY NIGHTS - Showcase a range of Sydney’s best bands and live acts. Presented in conjunction with Feral Media, Music For Trees, and Oxfam

10 July, Live music from Feral Media, featuring wintery soundscapes and warm beats created by a number of leading electronic and ambient musicians, including Vorad Fils, Gentleforce, Broken Chip and Underlapper. www.feralmedia.com.au

AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA

March 8th 2010 23:26
‘TAPAS’
AN UNEXPECTED (AND TASTY) ALBUM FROM
THE AUSTRALIAN BRANDENBURG ORCHESTRA
Released March 5

“What happens when you take 17th century music into a smoky dance hall?” says Paul Dyer artistic director of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. “You get something a little daring, sexy, and delicious. You get Tapas!”

“It’s our 21st, so we thought we’d take the Baroque out for a spin. We took baroque dance beats and love songs, and then we improvised till we found a new sound to stir up new emotions.

“Its old music on old instruments, made new. It’s all those gorgeous Brandenburg flavours in a spicy mix – dueling violins, a haunting lirone, spanish guitar, a divine soprano, bells, castanets, harpsichord, there’s even an old school wind machine. It’s ecstatic and highly intoxicating!”

ABC Classics releases the Tapas CD on 5 March and special Tapas performances will take place in Sydney and Melbourne later this month in a rare live concert performance of a Brandenburg recording.

“Our last disc won our 4th ARIA Award and has received rave reviews internationally, including an Editor’s Choice in the prestigious Gramophone magazine. But Tapas is going to take audiences on a whole new journey.”

“Tapas is also a tribute to the music-making of my parents – Mum, a pianist with a gift for improvisation, and Dad, who played the drums. Their influences of classical, swing, jazz and pop have led us to the rhythms of Tapas.”

“We’ve taken 21 years of historically informed performance practice and thrown it into the 21st century. Ladies and Gentlemen, Tapas is served!”

The Main Ingredients & Funkdafied step back in time and dig deep in the crates for the album launch of ‘Strange Breaks and Mr. Thing’ - a five part ultimate breaks and beats series paying homage to the popular ‘Strange Games’ Series on the BBE label.
Get ready to be educated as class is in session!

Known popularly as Mr. Thing, this supreme DJ first started spinning in 1987. The first Hip Hop record I bought was Streetsounds Crucial Electro and my first import 12" was BDP's POERY but my first actual record was - (cringing) Adam & The Ants "Kings Of The Wild Frontier"

From these humble beginnings Mr. Thing went on to become one the World's finest DJ's as testified by the following accomplishments.

DMC TEAM WORLD CHAMP (SCRATCH PERVERTS) 1999
DMC UK CHAMP 2000
DMC WORLD 3RD PLACE 2000

Mr. Thing doesn't stand still with spinning records. Alongside amassing a fantastic record collection from digging trips across every continent, he practiced his production skills and has gone on to remix and produce records for a credible assortment of UK acts.

BBE and Mr. Thing have known each other for over 10 years and it was just natural that this collaboration had to happen. The result is Strange Breaks and Mr. Thing a five part ultimate breaks and beats series and a homage to the popular Strange Games Series on the label.

I wanted to do an extension of my 'Anorak' series of mixtapes, which were already a homage if you like to Kon & Amir, Muro & the Conmen etc, but put some stuff out there that covered all bases of music & breaks from the ultra rare to some reasonably common stuff people might have passed up before!

Mr. Thing is a world class DJ capable of rocking any party in any town and has performed/toured with DJ Jazzy Jeff, J Live, Marley Marl, Beastie Boys, DJ Premier, DJ Vadim, Run DMC, Slum Village, Mark B & Blade, KRS One and Jehst.

Joseph Tawadros has studied with Mohamed Youssef, a renowned oud player, jazz pianist and family friend. Youssef encouraged Joseph to explore the musical parameters of the oud and the improvisatory style of traditional Egyptian taqasim.

In 2004, Joseph released his debut album Storyteller (ABC Classics) which was nominated for an ARIA award for the Best World Music album, this was followed by a second album - Rouhani in 2005 (ABC Classics). Visions in 2006, Epiphany in 2007, Angel in 2008 were all nominated for ARIA awards for Best World Music Album in their respective years.

Joseph has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues with artists such as tabla master Zakir Hussain, sarangi master Sultan Khan, Mali band Tinariwen, Slava Grigoryan, Leonard Grigoryan, Adel Salameh, Fathi Salama, Christian Lindberg, Neil Finn, Mark Isaacs, William Barton, Lior, The Song Company, Riley Lee, Karen Schaupp, Bobby Singh, Katie Noonan, James Crabb, Camerata Salzburg, Richard Tognetti and The Australian Chamber Orchestra amongst many others.

In May 2006 Joseph graduated with a Bachelor of music with Honours from the University of NSW with a pioneering analysis on advanced techniques and applications in oud playing. In the same year Joseph was the youngest recipient of the very prestigious Freedman Fellowship for Classical Music- chosen from amongst Australia’s finest Classical musicians.

Joseph has also composed for film and theatre, most notably the documentaries “The last days of Yasser Arafat” and “I Remember Palestine” and play “The Gates of Egypt”. He has also completed compositions for animations with artist Michael Roseth.

Joseph performs on a Joseph Tawadros Signature Series Oud made by Faruk Turunz of Istanbul.

James Tawadros – Req’

“What this boy can’t do with a tambourine isn’t worth trying. One moment it sounds like bongos, the next castanets, and often both together”
- The Australian

James was born in Australia in January, 1989. The brother of oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros he was brought up in an environment which encouraged music, his grandfather being Mansi Habib, an oud and violin virtuoso (1920-1957), and his uncle Yacoub Mansi Habib the legendary Egyptian trumpet pioneer.

Although only 19yrs of age, James has already made a name for himself as a world class percussionist and soloist, and is receiving praise reserved for those well beyond his years.

His main instrument is the Req’, a small hand held tambourine, traditionally with skin covering and five pairs of cymbals.

He has performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and with such artists such as Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, Richard Tognetti, Camerata Salzburg, Katie Noonan Alister Spence, Abdo Dagher, James Crabb, Mark Isaacs, Jeremy Alsop, The Song Company, Mary Doumany, Al Slavik, William Barton and regularly accompanies his brother in concert.

In 2005 he was invited by Oud virtuoso Adel Salameh (France/Palestine) and singer Naziha Azzouz to tour Australia and New Zealand with them, performing in Womadelaide, Womad New Zealand, and the Global Beats Festival at the Sydney Opera House. He was also invited by famous Israeli musician Yair Dalal in an all star jam.

Amongst James’ highlights for 2006 was an invitation by the Australian Chamber Orchestra as a guest soloist for “The Travellers” national tour and an ARIA nomination for his album Visions, Epiphany and Angel.

DYNAMITE IN BLACK AND WHITE
HOT LITTLE HANDS

Hot Little Hands
Dynamite in B&W

Softer harmonious pop rock lifts neat and tidily from Hot Little Hands’ fresh effort. I’m reminded of some of the early 70’s glam rock sounds with an edge that suits today’s musicians. To call it quirky is one way to go, but to get right down with things the title song Dynamite in Black and White is a rolling trip into the essential silly bugger territory that the likes of David Bowie and Klaatu jollied around in so long ago before they either vanished onto the internet or stepped up the sophistication quota a little.

Hot Little Hands are sophisticated and silly which is a beautiful alignment of spirit and bubbles well to the surface of the music. The album is very listenable and keeps the pace good for warm weather. In fact as summer approaches I think it would be very easy to get a lot of mileage out of Dynamite in B&W.

Hot Little Hands – armed with two synthesizers and Wurlitzer - aren’t just a reflection of the 80’s revival scene. Insert 1950’s electronic- voodoo-swamp-blues, 1960’s garage disco. Enter some old soul, a touch of electro, four part harmonies and now you’re getting the picture. Once framed, the picture is Hot Little Hand’s debut album : Dynamite in Black and White.

Based in Melbourne and led by Tim Harvey, of Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, Hot Little Hands are made up of another Harvey : - James on drums and vocals, - plus three honorary family members, Raph Hammond on trumpet, keyboards and vocals; Royce Akers on bass and Brigitte Hart on keyboards, percussion and vocals. As funky as Kraftwerk and as catchy as a TV Jingle, trumpet lines weave seamlessly within vocals to create huge chords and a decisive, driving pop sound.

Yes, Hot Little Hands make pop music, but as you can tell from the descriptions above, and from listening to Dynamite In Black and White it’s pop music created in styles that shift and retract. Dynamite In Black and White creates a world in which you are dancing with David Bowie while Prince plays television records at a 1930s New Orleans street parade.

Previously Hot Little Hands have supported Midnight Juggernaughts, Art of Fighting, Dan Kelly and The Alpha Males, The Valentinos, The Exploders, Panda Bear, Love Outside Andromeda, Vasco Era and Dan Brodie.

Currently Hot Little Hands are supporting Clare Bowditch on her national tour to coincide with the release of their debut long player – Dynamite in Black and White. Their own tour to support the album will take place nationally in August.

Put on your red shoes and practice your dance moves to Dynamite in Black and White, available now through EMI, released by Rubber Records.
