Stories of Love & Hate
Where matters of the heart are concerned, there's always two sides to the story…
A new theatre work by Urban Theatre Projects
Directed by Roslyn Oades
developed in association with Bankstown Youth Development Service
What is the greatest love of your life? Over a two-year period director Roslyn Oades asked this question to 65 people between the ages of 14 and 79 living in Bankstown and the Sutherland Shire. The result is Stories of Love & Hate a funny, intimate and confronting new work by renowned Urban Theatre Projects that looks at the lives and loves of people directly affected by the 2005 Cronulla riots.
Stories of Love & Hate is not a play about the riots, it is about the people who were there, in all their complexity, beauty and difference. The show explores the idea of hate as a consequence of feeling the things we love are under threat. It shares personal stories of hotted-up cars and rites of passage, to friendship and the deep love for family.
In Stories of Love & Hate Oades is hoping to “provide genuine empathy and access to the hearts of the residents directly affected by the riots – as well as a candid dialogue between some of the conflicting emotional issues at its core.”
Continuing the theatrical style established by Oades' critically acclaimed Fast Cars & Tractor Engines, an audioscript is edited from her recorded interviews and directly fed to performers on stage, who are wearing headphones. The actors channel multiple characters’ voices, and experiences with precision to create a compelling examination of community tensions.
A culturally diverse cast performs these stories, providing an alternative perspective on age, race, religious and gender differences. Cultures and ideologies are interwoven in this personal exploration of love, hate and loss.
